playing dress-up

January 8, 2010

My friends and I sometimes play this “game” where we tell each other what decade or century he or she belongs in. I’ve gotten a variety of responses from rural 1800s to the 1920s to, the most frequent, the sixties… and in all honesty I have a hard time deciding which era is my favorite!

When thinking of these periods in terms of fashion, I absolutely love them all. I love the delicate empire waist gowns of the early 1800s, the laid back extravagance of the 1920s and the bohemian freedom of the 1960s. Call me a loser, but I like imagining myself in each era, engaging in activities that I have read about or seen in movies. Jane Austen’s adorably sociable Emma playing the match maker for all of her friends; the maudlin, extroverted Sally Bowles from Cabaret indulging in everything she can; and the carefree Penny Lane of the 1960′s running wild and free amongst rockstars and other bohemians.

When I get dressed in the morning, a lot of my outfits are based around how I’m feeling that day – what mood I’m in, what music I’m listening to etc. From looking like I’ve walked right out of Studio 54 to wearing something as classy and elegant as Holly Golightly, I find that my look is always changing.

Here are some looks from eras that I love!
