If you had told me last year that my niners jersey would be something worthy of a street style snap during Fashion Week, I would have rolled my eyes and thrown a bucket of chicken wings at you. Last time I checked, a jersey’s stamp of approval only came from frat bars and football Sundays. But me and my chicken wing throwing arms stand corrected as jerseys from the basketball to the baseball to the football variety are everywhere. No longer are these sporty tops reserved for beer drinking bros, they’re walking the steps of Lincoln Center atop the stems of the high-heeled elite.
I of course wouldn’t consider myself a member of the high-heeled elite, especially given my graceful entrance into New York Fashion Week this season, but I’m never one to turn down a trend, especially if it involves something I already own. In the past 13 seasons, though they have always fallen on the same week, I have kept my football fandom separate from my Fashion Week excursions, but this September I was ready to do a backflip at the idea of combining the two polar opposite worlds into one look appropriate for both NYFW and the NFL kickoff.
