Marked Down

January 4, 2011

I always feel a little bratty going shopping after the holidays, but the sales are so incredible that sometimes it’s hard to keep my wallet in my purse! Just the other day I popped into Zara to see if they had an oversize black belt for my New Years dress and was blown away by how many pieces I bought at full price that are now on sale. Curses! Truth be told I don’t desperately need anything in my wardrobe, especially after a visit from Santa Claus, but there are certain items that are hard to resist at such knockdown prices. After all, fashion week’s a little over a month away and I suppose it’s time to start preparing for that, right? Right….

Loving Lara

December 9, 2010

Don’t get me wrong, I love Freja, Bregje, Hanne and a dozen more but when it comes down to my favorite model Lara Stone easily takes the cake and it seems I’m not alone in my obsession as she was just named model of the year at the British Fashion Awards. While I’ve mentioned my love for a gap-toothed smile before (see here), it’s Lara’s uncommon model figure, sensual eyes and lips, laid back style and sassy attitude that puts her at the very top of my favorite model list.

She’s played the role of muse to Karl Lagerfeld, opened and closed shows for the biggest names in the fashion industry, and has been the face of countless advertisements like Givenchy and Louis Vuitton. And while that may all sound normal for an average sized model with a perfect runway walk, Lara Stone is so far off the typical model spectrum that her place in the fashion industry could easily be paralleled with that of Kate Moss. She’s frequently referred to as “busty”, “curvy”, and “voluptuous” and makes frequent cracks at her inability to walk in heels which obviously poses a bit of a challenge when it comes to walking the catwalk. And yet despite her atypical attributes, Lara has managed to make the fashion industry fall head-over-heels in love with her.

Here are some of my favorite images of her but to be honest it took me over an hour to narrow it down to just these – everything she does is perfection.

Angels on the Runway

November 9, 2010

Tomorrow is the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (see my review from last year here), otherwise known as the biggest runway show in fashion…or…a runway full of the world’s most beautiful women half naked. It seems that with each year the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show gets that much bigger and more extravagant and this year is no exception. According to Modelinia there are going to be even more over-sized wings flying down the runway and Adriana Lima is set to wear a bra worth two million dollars in diamonds and jewels.

I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to harness on one of those extra heavy sets of wings and try to keep my composure in a next-to-nothing outfit while walking down a catwalk in front of hundreds of people…it’s no wonder these women are called “supermodels”.  Indeed, in a recent New York Times article, Guy Trebay notes that these angels are about as rare to the human population as a unicorn sighting in Central Park…

I can’t wait to see the new faces to the VS Angel line-up and how the designers up their incredible creations from last year. But until I can see the ensembles that grace this year’s runway I thought I’d pull together some of my favorite looks from seasons past.

Catskills

October 22, 2010

Last weekend I was fortunate to get out of the city and go to my friend’s camp up in Spruceton, New York, better known as the Catskills. I had never been to upstate New York before (don’t judge me I’m from California) and was excited to see the state outside of New York City’s five boroughs.

Although we arrived after sunset, much to my delight I could already feel the crisp, cool climate and fresh mountain air – a temperature unbeknownst to NYC. So to pass the time before sleep/sunrise we lit up a fire, feasted on cheese and drank perhaps a few too many bottles of wine before curling up in sleeping bags to enjoy a quiet slumber.

The next morning I was wide-eyed and bushy tailed as I awoke to see nothing but endless mountains sprinkled with leaves. There wasn’t as much foliage as I had expected but once I felt the drastic climate change and cool winds I wasn’t surprised that the majority of the leaves were scattered around the ground.

We spent most of the weekend exploring the property, shooting at empty cans and pumpkins, and eating far too much savory food. And while I don’t know much about the town of Spruceton (though I’ve been told it’s not much of a “town”), let me just say that the views in the Catskills are spectacular, the climate is beyond ideal, and all in all it was a perfect weekend getaway to kick my fall mindset into gear and spend time with good friends.

Have you ever been to the Catskills?
