Route Button-Down

December 17, 2012

I have an obsession with button-down shirts. Leave a few buttons unbuttoned and you’re one sexy mama, button them to the top and you’re lady prim-and-proper! And the best part is that you can essentially have an entire costume change without ever having to actually change your clothes.

Many years ago, I was hanging out with an ex-boyfriend while wearing a silky white button-down unbuttoned just enough to reveal my bra. We had plans to meet his mom for dinner that night and he took one look at the bra poking out of my shirt and said “you’re not going to go meet my mom like that are you?” I laughed the mighty laugh of confidence (actually I’m pretty sure I wiped away a tear, but that’s neither here nor there) and buttoned up my blouse to it’s tippidy top revealing a whole new, mother-friendly Sonia!

So for those of you meeting your significant other’s parents this holiday season, I highly recommend going the button-down route. Just don’t wear white cause you’re probably going to be at a dinner and risk the potential of a cocktail sauce stain.

Peanut Butter & Jelly

November 19, 2012

Certain colors go together like peanut butter and jelly; no matter the brand or bread, pb & j will always taste good (I actually have a friend who just made pb & j using a tortilla) much like the fiery fall colors of orange, red, and yellow.

Yesterday, on a stroll through Central Park, I couldn’t help but notice my color coordination with the autumnal trees around me. I’m not normally that colorful of a dresser, but wearing such eye-catching and seasonal tones while everyone else around me was wearing black Lululemon while pushing their strollers around (the quintessential Sunday morning in Central Park) was a definite morning coffee perk for me.

And before you go thinking that the trees and I called each other the night before to plan matchy matchy outfits, think again. We didn’t talk; hell, I don’t even know these guys, though they were more than willing to let me swing on their branches.

Staycation Tropics

November 1, 2012

Growing up in California I never had a snow day and I most certainly never had an entire week of nothing to do because of a hurricane. This week has been weird: while I’m working from home, it still feels like a strange staycation that I wasn’t prepared for and I thus feel like a total blob.

So for today’s post I thought I’d share photos from an old photo shoot I did in front of a tropical garage door (yea, that exists). For the occasion, I wore my hair in its fullest beachy wave (aka au naturel with a bit more curl defining cream than usual), because sea water hair goes hand-in-hand with palm trees. But there’s another reason I chose such a colorful background for today’s post.

Paul Mitchell is doing this awesome thing where he’s projecting giant photos of people’s  CurlConfession in hotspot locations in NYC and LA on November 15th at 6pm EST. You can upload your own #CurlConfession to Paul Mitchell’s facebook, twitter, or instagram using the hashtag and you can be projected right up there with me! And if that isn’t enough of an incentive to share your pic, Paul Mitchell is also giving away a full sized Curls product line every week to their favorite curl confessions! So go get curly with it! Burn yourself on the curling iron! Actually don’t do that unless you’re looking for an excuse to cover up a hickey.

Ponchos + Platforms

January 25, 2012

I talked about them and here they are; the Burberry London platforms I’ve been kicking and screaming over ever since I saw them on Miroslava Duma during Fashion Week, and at a fraction of the price might I add.. I admit their height took a little while to get used to (I might have almost toppled down the stairs while running to catch the subway) but they’re surprisingly comfortable and well, this won’t be the last time you see them. As for the poncho concoction I’m wearing, thanks to yesterday’s warmer temperatures (50° and sunny in January? Ok, NYC, I’ll take it!) I was delighted to leave my coats on their hangers and wear something less bulky but still perfectly cozy. Now the question is, how long will this “heat wave” last?

Eating hair is cool…

3 Different Ways

December 7, 2011

One of my favorite things about my friends is that they’re all wildly different. From career choices to music preferences to personal style, each one of them is wonderfully unique.

Recently, Coach sent over three bags, which, like my friends, couldn’t be more different. An elegant and chic clutch reminds me of my food loving, business-driven friend Erin, who always manages to look polished even in leggings and an oversized sweater. The buttery soft, cherry red purse is as classic and tasteful as my science-loving friend Gillian who doesn’t even realize how fashionable she is. And lastly, the modern, structured black and blue satchel, which is edgy and creative like my hilarious friend Claire, who can’t leave the house without a good pair of sunglasses and something leopard.

I put each bag with an outfit of my own style, but I think I was channeling each of these friends when getting dressed.  And while I wouldn’t mind hanging onto all of these purses, they’d also be the perfect Christmas surprise for my three friends. Santa, please take note.
