I’m A Little Teapot

December 5, 2011

Here’s a little fact about me: I have a tendency to overheat. Often, when most people are cold, I am a steaming hot teapot ready to explode. On Christmas morning about two years ago I got so hot sitting in the kitchen that my Mom put me outside to “cool off”…it worked, but I felt a little like a dog being told to “go outside.” Woof. Suffice it to say, it sucks most of the time with the exception of fall and winter – the seasons that allow me to bounce around outside without breaking a sweat and can layer as much as I damn well please!

The look you see here is a case-in-point, multi-layered outfit – that’s five layers people – that I put together for a day of Christmas shopping in Soho.  I wore this with the intention of not having to fuss over a big, lumpy jacket every time I overheated while still being warm enough to not regret not bringing one. Well, the outfit was a success! Not once did I overheat nor did I shiver when a crisp wind blew past me. As much as I love coats, this may be the new way to go for busy days filled with errands.

I’ve always thought it would be cool to hike on sand dunes, perhaps even roll down a few if the opportunity presented itself. There’s just something wonderful about endless, rolling hills of sand with the occasional shrub or camel sighting.

I bought this Mara Hoffman tunic-y thing over a year ago and have only worn it as a beach cover-up but it’s far too beautiful to reserve only for beach side occasions. So I threw it over a black bandeau top and a pair of black leggings for an imaginary excursion on some sand dunes. I love the way it blows in the wind and all of its intricate aztec detailings that Mara Hoffman does impeccably well. While probably best worn only in the summertime, I can totally imagine wearing it in the fall with a heavy leather jacket (I feel like I want to wear everything with a leather jacket and I’m ok with that…) and some ripped up jeans. However, a hot day on some dunes requires the most comfortable and light apparel, but next time I think I’ll go barefoot.

I’m always trying to figure out new ways to wear pieces in my closet. A dress can so easily become a skirt (see here), scarves can be transformed into shirts (see here), but what about a skirt worn as a shirt?!

It was a real scorcher in NYC yesterday and I mussed and fussed with different outfits until I broke into a sweat. All I wanted was to wear a jacket and jeans but no way was I about to put on pants equivalent to sausage casings. So I decided to go the more experimental route. I was originally wearing the above “shirt” as a skirt, the way it’s meant to be worn, but didn’t feel like doing the whole itsy bitsy mini-skirt thing on a day when I knew my legs would stick to anything I sat on. So, I pulled it up over my lady friends, transforming it into a tube top (an article of clothing I don’t even own) and paired it with a flowy silk skirt my Mom bought me when she was traveling in India. Since the skirt-turned-shirt was a bit looser around the waist, I had plenty of breathing room which prevented serious overheating.

As much as I love shopping (duh), it’s nice to know that I can still transform pieces in my wardrobe into entirely new articles of clothing. I wonder what I’ll discover next!

{ A visit to the Plaza }

As much as I miss being on the shore, it feels really great to be back in the city. This week was busier than I expected and aside from the sweat, it was great to be running from meetings to press events to more meetings. I’m working on a bunch of fun, upcoming projects that I am dying to share with you but I have to restrain myself. I promise I’ll tell you as soon as I can!

It’s a rare occasion that I get to kick-start my week with a spa treatment, but thanks to Birchbox and Caudalie, my week initiated with an amazing premier eye treatment at the Caudalie spa in the Plaza hotel followed by Caudalie wine and some incredible cheese. If only every week could start like that! I also got to preview Meredith Wendell’s Resort 2012 Collection which blew my mind! Definitely adding that release date to my calendar. And oh, how I wish I could share more about my week but you’ll know soon enough!

I’m excited to spend a weekend in NYC even though most people seem to be fleeing the predicted rain/heat. Sometimes all I need is a little time away for me to realize how much I love the city I live in – absence really does make the heart grow fonder!

Happy Weekend!

July 18, 2011

I love discovering different ways to wear things. For example, what appears to be a skirt in this post is actually a skimpy little dress that at times feels a bit too bare, so why not throw a button up shirt over it? Why not indeed! And who knew that buttoning a casual denim shirt up all the way could immediately give a look structure and sophistication?! I always hate that I can’t really layer clothing in the summer, but this layered look was light enough that I wasn’t breaking a sweat with a wiggle of a toe. Although I will say that whipping my hair back and forth (see last photo) did make me a little damp but that’s nothing a little dip in the pool can’t fix!
