Pink & Purple

February 14, 2013

Valentine1

I used to be the cynical type that wanted to burn every Valentine’s Day aficionado who came in my direction. Even in relationships I acted like I could care less about this day. But let’s be honest, what girl doesn’t want flowers, chocolates, or in my personal case, a giant bowl of guacamole?

So, a few years ago I decided to kill off my cynical “woe is me, I hate this hallmark day” self, and adopt a more festive and optimistic me. I get into the spirit of every other holiday (Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Fourth of July…I even wear a shirt with a giant photo of my mom on Mother’s Day. Just kidding.), so why not embrace Valentine’s Day as well.

So here I am, dressed in head-to-toe pink and purple ready to stuff my face with Mexican food tonight. Because that’s just how I roll on Valentine’s Day. More on that in a post later today though…stay tuned.

Until then, Happy Valentine’s Day!

Cozy in Amsterdam

October 8, 2012

I usually pride myself on packing well. I look ahead at the weather, make endless lists, and tend to overpack just enough so that I have options. This was not the case last week in Amsterdam. Despite Kim relentlessly telling me how cold it was going to be, I was convinced that 50-55 degree weather was nothing for this San Francisco raised lady. Wrong-o. I was freezing.

It was seriously cold and rainy on our last day, so I bundled up in a furry denim jacket that I’ve had since high school, and one of my coziest scarves that doubles as a hood. Though I could have done with a down jacket, I was significantly warmer than the previous day when all I wore was a thin linen blazer.

Shorts Suit At Last

August 7, 2012

Back in April I shared my hunger for a sleek and sophisticated shorts suit. Four months later and I’ve finally got my hands on one.

My Mom and I stopped in a few outlet shops this past weekend where I ducked my head into BCBG to see if I could find a bargain on any flowy maxi dresses. Maxi dresses there were not, but beautifully cut blazers there were aplenty. I walked around the store with two blazers (one black, one white) for awhile before stumbling upon the perfect pair of black shorts that went hand-in-hand — or should I say seam-in-seam(?) — with the black blazer I’d found. This was one of those few instances where I didn’t even bother trying anything on — when you know, you know…am I right? — and I’m delighted to say that they both made it into yesterday’s work outfit.

Though summer may be coming to an end, the heat is not, and I can guarantee that this suit will be in heavy rotation for many months to come.

An Old Favorite

June 21, 2012

My summer uniform is pretty much filled with simple, playful dresses that I can mindlessly throw on and be out the door in ten minutes top. I probably add at least five new dresses to my wardrobe each summer, but it’s this dress in particular that I will forever return to.

I bought it about five years ago on a trip to Bloomingdale’s with a friend who was on the hunt for a pair of sandals for a wedding. I abandoned her in the shoe department (cheesy sales people, so not my scene) and meandered around the store admiring everything but swearing that I would walk out of there empty handed. Yeah right, like that ever happens…

Before I knew it I was in the dressing room trying on jackets, pants, sweaters, shirts, skirts, dresses, etc., but nothing was appealing enough for me to seal the deal. Just as I was about to give up and go find my friend, I started rummaging through the selections that the person before me had left in the dressing room. That’s where I met this dress by Free People. Who was I to turn down a dress with a fish print on it?

I’ve since worn it to everything you could possibly imagine: music festivals, a cocktail party (just add a blazer and some heels), swimming in the ocean (not kidding), and I’ve almost always worn it with matching red nails. This year however, I decided to try it out with Sally Hansen’s Magnetic nail polish in silver, which reminds me of fish scales with its squiggles and waves. Though the polish stands out on its own, it ended up blending in perfectly with my  dress, which has me thinking I may live in this entire outfit all summer long!

Cuffed

May 22, 2012

{ Ear cuff via Asos }

A few months ago I talked about ear cuffs having a moment. Well, I’m not sure about you guys but the whole term “cuff” is taking over my wardrobe. I may as well have a needlepoint pillow sitting on my couch saying “when in doubt, cuff” since that’s really all I’ve been doing these last few weeks. I cuff my jeans, I cuff my blazers, I cuff my shirts, and I’m all about cuffs in jewelry. Bangles can be so frustrating because they clamor up and down your wrist, but a cuff (!), a cuff you can tighten wherever you want, thus preventing the whole jingle jangle music from a bracelet pile up. Another thing I love about cuffing is that so many pieces of clothing have colorful or patterned lining that deserves to be turned up toward the light of day instead of constantly staring at your arm hair or unshaved legs.

Are you guys big “cuffers?” We’re making it a noun now.
