Camo Bo Bamo

Trends are bullshit. You know why? Because the minute you say “I would never wear that” you find yourself coveting a similar item only a year or so later. Case in point: the camouflage print. I can attest that back in the day when items from Delia*s and Abercombie + Fitch dominated my closet there were indeed some camo pieces, but it has been over a decade since I even considered wearing it.
Until recently, the print reminded me of my not so stylish pre-pubescent days where braces were color coordinated with holidays and butterfly clips surrounded my ballerina bun. But now I find myself strangely attracted to the print and its surprising versatility. Like plaid or pinstripes, camouflage can stand as well on its own as it can when paired with equally busy prints — i.e. leopard. And so here you see me betraying my previous sentiments of hatred regarding the camo print and wearing it like it’s a necessary staple in my day-to-day wardrobe.
This not only supports my initial statement that trends are bullshit, but also that fashion is fickle. One second you’re swearing off anything snakeskin and then you’re wearing gold snakeskin pants that Snooki probably wore in the first season of Jersey Shore. Oh fashion, you trickster.

The Color Pool

Baby blue is not a color I tend to reach for. This is mainly because people with blue eyes are always told how great they look in blue and unfortunately wearing the color brown doesn’t really yield the same response. “Hey! That’s a great color brown on you, really brings out the brown in your eyes” — yeah, no, that never happens.
But when I spotted this fuzzy blue Acne sweater on sale, I just couldn’t resist. No, it didn’t “bring out my eyes” or compliment my pale skin in a particularly striking way, but it’s cozy and a refreshing change from my other go-to colors.
I’m sure there are many of you out there who swear that you can’t wear lime green or tangerine or pastels or whatever, but before you completely remove that certain hue from your wearable colors list, I suggest you test out a few shades. Some greens have a bit more grey in them, some yellows a bit more cream, and so on and so forth. I know that a cold pastel green makes me look like I’m perpetually seasick, but one with a little more yellow works on me. But for baby blue I’ve found that a more saturated shade makes me look like I’m a confused 5 year-old tomboy, while cooler shades are more flattering. So, as the spring collections start hitting stores and the inevitable springy hues dominate every rack, I suggest you try a variety of different shades instead of nixing the rack of soft pink entirely.

La Tur

As a blogger whose online presence revolves primarily around sharing sartorial choices, I really try not to repeat certain articles of clothing. Obviously there are some exceptions like bags, shoes, and underwear (scratch that last one, I’ve been wearing this bra for a straight week now and you didn’t know that, ha!), but for the most part I really try to mix it up. You come here to see something different and different I shall at least try to give you!
But part of me thinks you also come here to see some normalcy, and the truth of the matter is that I wear this shirt a lot. So much so that it was sitting in my dirty dry cleaning bag (note: this bag has been at the bottom of my closet since the beginning of October), and I started to miss it so much that I hand-washed it so it could be brought back into its normal weekly rotation.
At the risk of sounding disgustingly materialistic, I will say that having this shirt back in my closet makes me feel somewhat whole again. Kind of like when your favorite cheese isn’t at the cheese store and you try other allegedly similar cheeses that taste fine but really all you can think about is when the La Tur is going to be back in stock. Finally you get so fed up with trying different cheeses claiming to taste like La Tur that you go to a different cheese store, one that’s out of your way no less, so you can serve the creamy mound of fat heaven at your next dinner party.
I’ve gotten off track here, but the point I’m trying to make is that sometimes it’s not worth $100 to take your load of dirty clothes to the dry cleaner when all you really need to do is hand-wash the item you’re missing. Certain fabrics may not apply, see tag for details.

Snap, Crackle, Pop

This coat has been a favorite of mine since I found it on sale for $39 at Zara last year, but this weekend was the first time I’ve been able to wear it this winter. I don’t normally go for coats with boxy shoulders but something about the straight fit of this one works like pizza dipped in ranch dressing.
Though the base my outfit is pretty standard – jeans, blouse, sweater, underwear… – I like how the busy leopard print of the coat instantly makes the overall silhouette more interesting. Sometimes all it takes is one statement piece to make an outfit pop like rice krispies to milk. Clearly I have food on my mind so I’m going to leave you with that while I gobble up a snack.

Drunk At Vogue

I admittedly bought these Manolo Blahnik‘s after watching that episode of Sex and the City (for the umpteenth time) where Carrie gets drunk at Vogue and falls in love with these patent leather mary janes. Yes, I’m in a serious relationship with Sex and the City (see here for proof) but I’m also madly in love with these shoes and I don’t think it’s only because of the show.
I’ve worn them numerous amounts of times (see here and here for a mere glimpse), and when I received an invitation to have brunch at Vogue with QVC last Friday, there was no way I was going without my “drunk at vogue” shoes strapped to my feet. While I didn’t actually get drunk at Vogue a la Carrie Bradshaw, I did enjoy a delicious pain au chocolat and some coffee before venturing out into the cold with Emily for a walk around Bryant Park.
**I realize I look absolutely exhausted in these photos…hoping this past weekend of rest has changed that.
