Suspend Yourself

October 21, 2010

Suspenders are easily the most underrated accessory for both men and women. I myself almost always grab a sturdy leather belt to keep my pants in place instead of a pair of springy suspenders. In fact, unless the pants have buttons specifically designed for suspenders I’m not so convinced they function as anything more than a bold, contrasting accessory. But since when is there anything wrong with that?

Although rare, whenever I do reach for a pair of suspenders I’m always blown away by how easily they jazz up a boring outfit or add some edge to an otherwise feminine look. However, even though they quickly spruce up an outfit, they’re not the most versatile accessory. I find that they’re best paired with high-waisted pants, skirts or shorts; anything lower than my belly-button and I could easily pass for Humpty Dumpty. But even if you have to go through a few trial and error ensembles before getting the suspender look down right, once you do I guarantee that you’re going to want to incorporate these stretchy straps into your outfits much more frequently.

She Bangs

May 13, 2010

I’m reaching one of those periods in my life where I have mixed feelings about my hair and am not sure how I want to “change it”. I went through these periods quite a lot in high school and thus dyed my hair a variety of different colors and tried out a number of different cuts. Then once I hit college I pretty much stuck with the same look (aside from dying it this dreadful purple-y red for a play), long wavy hair, with blond highlights and BANGS!

This is the first time in YEARS that I haven’t had bangs and I’m beginning to feel a little nostalgic for them. While the hot humid summers in NYC are no place for a new set of bangs, I can’t help thinking about changing up my look this coming fall/winter. Here are some looks that get my hair styling wheels crankin’:

Bursts of Color

May 4, 2010

When it comes to colorful clothing, I tend to veer towards more neutral colors. For example, I, embarrassingly enough, organize the clothing in my bureau according to “color” and have one drawer dedicated to white, another to black/gray, and one I like to call the “rainbow drawer”. It’s not that I don’t enjoy wearing colors, because I do, I just usually wind up being most satisfied with an outfit made of shadowy hues as opposed to ones made up of vibrant colors. That being said, I do enjoy adding a burst of color to an otherwise neutral outfit to spice things up a bit. From a pair of bright yellow harem pants paired with a sheer black blouse to an all black ensemble paired with a bright turquoise necklace, I always try to bring a little color into my outfit.

Below I have compiled some looks that have atleast one bright burst of color; be it yellow, red, blue, or purple, these girls know how to bring color into an outfit.

shoe shoe

January 5, 2010

Like most fashion bloggers, I thoroughly enjoy sifting through magazines and style blogs to give me inspiration when I can’t seem to find any in my own closet. Yet, even as I do this, I can’t deny the art history major in me that finds symmetry and patterns throughout my searches. While Jak & Jil is most well known for the documentation of footwear, I couldn’t help but notice that so many blogs have absolutely beautiful photographs of shoes!! Here are some of my favorites:

Olivia Malone + Cory Kennedy

November 18, 2009

Olivia Malone is one of my favorite photographers. The saturation of colors in her photos are stunning, and she really has an understanding of how to photograph people. She is a New York City based photographer, but it seems that she rarely photographs within the actual city. One of the things I love most about her photography is the urgency of time; each photo looks as if it has captured one of the most beautiful seconds in time and then literally, in a flash, that moment is gone.

A few years back she did a photo shoot with the beloved it-girl Cory Kennedy. As I was browsing through some of the photographs I have saved on my computer, I came across this shoot and thought I’d share it with the rest of you!

I highly recommend checking out Olivia’s site though, it is filled with even more beautiful photos of people, landscapes and things that catch her eye.
