Laundry Day

February 8, 2012

I call this outfit Laundry Day because all of my everyday staples were in the wash and this is what I came up with. Laundry day mornings are significantly more difficult than normal mornings because you’re forced to dress outside of your comfort zone. This can result in some seriously atrocious outfits (I’m looking at you crop-top + leggings disaster), but it can also create some prettaaay prettaaay prettaaaay (any other Larry David fans out there?) great outfits as well.

I had completely forgotten about these Theyskens’ Theory jeans until they toppled on top of me while I was grabbing for one of my way too many pairs of black jeans the other morning. I was also finally forced to forgo my go to sweaters and silk blouses and reintroduce a spring tank top that was at one point a recurring star in my daily outfit rotations. Isn’t it funny how an article of clothing that you swore you’d never stop wearing ultimately finds its way to the very back of your closet? I always kind of feel bad for those pieces but I guess clothes don’t have feelings; and it’s a good thing they don’t because I throw way too many of them on the floor on laundry days…

Style Icon: Emmanuelle Alt

February 2, 2012

In anticipation of Fashion Week I figured this month’s “Style Icon” should be a front row/street style blog frequent who gives me some serious closet envy, otherwise known as Emmanuelle Alt. Damn can that lady wear a pair of skinny jeans and a blazer like nobodies business; but let’s make it our business right now.

Along with the fact that her style is sleek simplicity at its finest and that Balmain may or may not be made specifically for her, it amazes me that she can essentially throw together the same outfit day-in-and-day-out and still make it look different, interesting, and for lack of a better word, sexy! Ya, I said it, Emmanuelle Alt is sexy.

We all know how much I love a good blazer and pair of sausage casings skinny jeans, and I gotta say it’s refreshing to know that it’s a go-to for someone as impactful in the fashion industry as Emmanuelle Alt. So for all those mornings next week when I throw a fashion fit on “not having anything to wear,” I take comfort in knowing that my daily uniform is totally acceptable for Fashion Week – since the sidewalks are equally as followed as the runways.

Ponchos + Platforms

January 25, 2012

I talked about them and here they are; the Burberry London platforms I’ve been kicking and screaming over ever since I saw them on Miroslava Duma during Fashion Week, and at a fraction of the price might I add.. I admit their height took a little while to get used to (I might have almost toppled down the stairs while running to catch the subway) but they’re surprisingly comfortable and well, this won’t be the last time you see them. As for the poncho concoction I’m wearing, thanks to yesterday’s warmer temperatures (50° and sunny in January? Ok, NYC, I’ll take it!) I was delighted to leave my coats on their hangers and wear something less bulky but still perfectly cozy. Now the question is, how long will this “heat wave” last?

Eating hair is cool…

Cabernet Sauvignon

January 9, 2012

We all know how much I love me some monochromatic looks, so naturally when I purchased this pair of Current/Elliott jeans I knew it was only a matter of time before I dabbled in the burgundy/red mash up (*note: this could also be because I’m not drinking this month and am admittedly having some red wine withdrawls).

I threw this outfit together in the very last minute before a brunch with some friends on Sunday and have to say, I’m quite pleased with the results (which is a rarity when I just throw a few pieces together without so much as a glance in the mirror). Now I know what you’re all thinking, “Sonia, you need to stop wearing those Acne boots, it’s getting old,” and I hear you, I really do. But here’s the thing, I CAN’T STOP! They are hands down the best shoes I have ever owned and it’s a daily struggle not to wear them all the time, even though it already seems like I do. They’re like the black skinny jeans of shoes in my wardrobe – just when I think I’m ready to move on, I slip them on and poof! my outfit is 1,323,252,313 times better than it was before.

Do you have something like that in your closet? Please share so that perhaps I can move on from my current addiction.

Style Icon: Alana Zimmer

January 4, 2012

Does the outfit above look familiar? It should; I pretty much copied it in my outfit post yesterday. Until I saw the above photo on Vanessa Jackman’s blog, I’d never really thought of Alana Zimmer as a style icon. Unlike many other models, Alana doesn’t appear on every single style blog during Fashion Week, but lord almighty when she does she looks goooood. So good in fact that I nixed the other style guru I had in mind for this month and decided to feature her instead.

Her style is simple, clean, and feminine – kind of like a Celine collection. Her outfits don’t feature a ton of color, but when they do she knows how to work them in without looking like a character from Rainbow Brite (not that anything is wrong with Rainbow Brite, I love Rainbow). But take the outfit featured below: the clementine orange sweater is just the right touch of color to a simple look of navy trousers and a crisp white button down. In fact, many of her looks have that one accent piece that turn up the heat on an otherwise basic outfit (cue her hat in the photo below the orange sweater or the asymmetrical jacket in the last photo of this post). Brilliance.

I can’t wait to see what she busts out this coming Fashion Week!
