Bell Bottom Sensations

April 2, 2012

I’ve been really feeling flared jeans lately. While I’ve worn them a few times before (see here and here), it’s only recently that they’ve become an everyday grab. Along with adding significant length to the legs (when worn with heels), they also have the perfect combination of relaxed comfort and sleek silhouette. I also personally enjoy the swishy swishy feel they make when walking – if you look down as you walk the bell goes front and back like a swing – swishy swishy. I totally recognize that the previous sentence is odd and I may be the only one who gets that sensation when wearing bell bottoms, but if you do get what I’m saying then I give you a cyber high-five.

I’m still experimenting with different flared denim looks and would love your input! Do I go big and do the whole floppy hat shebangle or should I keep with the more refined ensemble? Tell me pwease! Other suggestions welcome, too!

The Perfect Climate

March 28, 2012

So much for spring that feels like summer! The temperatures have dropped drastically this week and I’m back to layering and bundling up; but I’m channeling my stubborn side during this coldfront and refuse to break my puffer coat out. Instead, I’m making full use of the transitional pieces in my wardrobe that will inevitably be pushed aside in the next week or so when the city sizzles up in a heat wave again.

Meet the winter accessories combined with fall necessities like a cozy sweater and lightweight jacket look. The combination of the two is what I like to call the San Francisco Style Syllabus – I actually just made that up, but float with me on this one. As a San Francisco native, I’m used to temperatures hanging out around 50-60 degrees with a crisp Pacific windchill. Such climates allow for a flexible wardrobe that has no regard for seasons – see me back in June circa 2003 wearing a mini skirt and down bomber jacket…awkward good times! So, while other New Yorkers grab their puffer jackets and Uggs, I thrive in the knowledge that I’ll be in my ideal climate with the ability to wear pretty much anything in my closet; kind of like a polar bear that’s run away from the zoo and found his way back to the snowy North Pole. Perfection.

I like this weather so much I broke out in a tabletop tap dance…

A Week in Review

March 23, 2012

{ Cherry blossoms at the Macy’s Impulse x Alberta Ferretti party }

Well, hello there Friday! Good to see you!

This week put the hec in hectic. Between the back-to-back press appointments to having my credit card hacked to packing up my apartment, I seriously thought this weekend would never come! But here it is and I cannot wait to jump on a train to DC for some much needed family damily time.

But let’s rewind for a sizzling second and talk about these press appointments. I was blown away by everything I saw this week – fall is gonna be good you guys, really really reallaaaaaay good. Some standouts include three new favorite designers: Emm Kuo – a handbag line full of timeless pieces with just the right touch of edge, Rodebjer – a Swedish designer that does menswear as womenswear like no other, and lastly, Michael Spirito – the perfect punk-meets-class jewelry collection. Meow!

And now I need to go finish up my packing, give Finn a big smooch, and hit the road! Until Monday! Exclamation points!!

Primary Colors

March 21, 2012

The first day of spring beckons something colorful and breezy, so when I woke up yesterday morning I looked no further than this Marc by Marc Jacobs dress that’s been hanging in my closet since last summer. It’s one of the few lightweight pieces that didn’t get tucked away during the winter months as I was convinced I would wear it with black booties, a leather jacket, and lots of snowy accessoires; but alas I never did and it’s thus been occupying space and staring at me for 6+ months.

Happy to take it out for a twirl (note: if you twirl fast enough you look like a beach umbrella – just sayin’), I let the dress take the spotlight and traded in the lightweight ribbon belt and simple sandals I paired it with last summer for bolder accessories. Weird how adding bulkier pieces make something whimsical stand out that much more; then again, the primary colors in this twirly number are enough to bring a speeding taxicab to a full stop…true story. Just call me the traffic ninja. Or don’t.

Risking Denim on Denim

March 19, 2012

Ah, the Canadian Tuxedo. Such a fine line between looking totally put together or totally ridiculous; but what it really comes down to is texture and wash.  For one, you don’t want to do a complete denim match-up, otherwise it looks like you’re wearing a denim jumpsuit – though even that has a time and place beyond the world of carpentry (see overalls) – and you also want to pay careful attention to the thickness of each piece, as bulky denim can be a little overpowering when worn together (see Justin & Britney c.2001).

On perhaps the most springy day we’ve had so far, I went out on a whim and paired two of my palest denim pieces together with the daily sartorial question, “I wonder if these would look good together.” Far too many times such a question has turned out an outfit so horrid it could break a mirror, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this denim-on-denim outcome. I definitely got a few double takes while walking down the street, but sometimes you just have to risk the stare downs and think, maybe they’re going home to replicate the look right now. Or maybe I’m just a freak and trying to defend my weird sartorial choices. I’m cool with either.
