DIY • Festival Headbands

June 1, 2010

In just one week, my best friend Jennie and I will be packing up a rental car and driving down to Tennessee for the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Aside from making packing lists, playlists, and putting together my Bonnaroo music schedule, I have been busy making headbands for us to wear.

The headbands in the above picture were the first ones that I ever made. We wore them last year for All Points West and got so many compliments that I decided to make a whole new batch for this year’s festival season.

I buy all of my supplies at M&J Trimmings in NYC, which is basically a decoration mecca. They have EVERYTHING – suede, detailed ribbon, fake flowers, feathers – you name it, they’ve got it. Once you have all your trimmings, all you need is some elastic, a glue gun, a needle and some thread.

After I measure the circumference of my head, I glue a small piece of elastic to the end of one side of the fabric and secure it by running a needle and thread through a few times. Then using the same process, I attach the other side of the fabric to the elastic so that there’s a bit of stretch to my headband.

After that, I either leave the headband as it is or add flowers, feathers, ribbons, or anything else I find that will make it more aesthetically pleasing.

Here are some of the finished pieces:

Festival Season

March 30, 2010

This past weekend was Ultra Music Festival which means that my favorite season has officially begun: FESTIVAL SEASON!!

Just thinking about music festivals puts a smile on my face. Between the live outdoor music, hanging out with friends, barbecuing by the tent, and hilarious sandal tans, I can’t think of a better time.

So far I have been to Coachella, All Points West, Bonnaroo and Outside Lands, but I plan on going to many, many more.

I love all the preparations that go into planning for a music festival: creating a personal schedule of what bands to see, figuring out how exactly you’re going to get there, finding out who else is going, and obviously, deciding what you’re going to wear! My best friend Jennie and I are infamously known for music festival get-ups and we love every minute of it.

With Coachella only 17 days away, and Bonnaroo a little over a month later, it’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to wear!

I’m a firm believer in purchasing cheap outfits for festivals because chances are, you’re going to end up muddy and walk away with a few rips and tears. My first and sometimes only stop on the festival outfit shopping list is Forever21. They always have a large selection of lightweight dresses and rompers as well as tons of cheap sunglasses and sandals. I’m not a huge fan of wearing shorts and a tank top because once the sun is directly over you’re head and you start sweating, the last thing you want to worry about is walking around carrying an extra piece of clothing. But, it’s really about what you feel most comfortable in.

Once I’ve figured out all of my clothing choices, I head over to my nearest party store for an assortment of different things: face paint (my favorite), glow sticks (Jennie’s favorite), TONS of colorful beads, bubbles, and anything else that catches my festival hungry eye.

Below I’ve pulled together some of my must-have items for this years music festivals.
