Fall Cleaning

October 4, 2011

{ Robust Red Hues: MAC lipstick in Ruby Woo, Nars lipstick in Gipsy, Revlon lipstick in Sultry Sable }

Last night I started switching out my summer closet with my fall and winter pieces, and that includes make-up. While I’ll still bust out bright orange (see here) and fuschia lipstick (see here) every once in awhile and I’ll always enjoy painting my nails neon pink, my go-tos for the cooler months have always been richer, darker colors like robust red lipstains and murky nail lacquers; what can I say, I love when my nails look like a dirty pond! My perfumes also change - in the summertime I like lighter, crisper scents like Chloé’s Eau de Parfum and in the fall and winter I can’t get enough of Jean Paul Gaultier’s Classique Eau. I’m also eager to try out Tom Ford’s new scent, Violet Blonde.

I like to consider this my “Fall Cleaning”, I throw out stuff that I haven’t worn or used in a coons age and make room for new goodies that I will undoubtedly accumulate. Here are some products I plan to use for the next six months…

{ Faux Tan: Nars bronzer in Laguna, Benefit Glamazon }

{ One of my favorite scents for Fall: Jean Paul Gaultier in Classique Eau }

{ Murky nail lacquers: Essie in Power Clutch, Revlon’s Power Canvas, OPI in Lincoln Park After Dark }

Into the Gloss

I’m loving all these blogs like Style Like U, The Coveteur and Into the Gloss, which feature glimpses into people’s homes allowing readers like you and me to snoop without fear of being caught. What is it about knowing what face wash so-and-so uses that makes us run out and buy it within seconds? I’ve come to learn that a lot of the products we see in magazines are mainly for publicity and advertising reasons, but the products we see on the aforementioned blogs have a much more honest and authentic feel.

My closet is a bit cluttered right now (currently in the process of doing a huge clean out), so I figured I’d let you guys snoop through my beauty products a la Into the Gloss until I’m a bit more organized in the clothing department. I’ve discussed my beauty and make-up routine on here before (see here & here) but truth be told it’s always changing…probably because I read these blogs that have me convinced that Cetaphil is the right moisturizer for me. So here’s a glimpse of the latest products I’m using.

Recently I’ve received a bunch of emails regarding my “beauty routine” and what my favorite products are, so I thought I’d do a giant post about the products I use and like. But before I get started let me just say that I know next-to-nothing about make-up and hair. Sure I play around with different looks and products but it’s really just a lot of trial and error until I find something that I like. That being said, I’m always on the lookout for product and technique suggestions, so if you have any “must-have” items or routines, please LET ME KNOW!

Here’s what’s currently occupying my shower, medicine cabinet, and make-up bag.

Hair:

I normally change up my shampoo and conditioner whenever I hit the pharmacy but there’s something about the combination of Aveeno Nourish + Volumize shampoo and Deva Curl One conditioner that has me buying it again and again. My hair has a tendency to get knotty really easily so I use Frederic Fekkai Technician Color Care Deep Conditioner once a week to add some extra moisture and shine. To keep my waves from getting too fluffy I use a combination of Redken Ringlet 07 and Joico Body Luxe mousse. Although mousse can often make hair crunchy, I find that this brand leaves my hair super soft while still keeping my waves intact.

Skin:

My skin is pretty normal so I like to combine both lightweight and heavy duty cleansers and moisturizers. In the morning I’m as basic as they come with Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser and Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer. At night I get a little more intense with Rodan + Fields Unblemish Acne Sulfer Wash and Jurlique Herbal Recovery Night Cream which is wonderfully light and leaves my skin feeling refreshed when I wake up in the morning.

Concealer:

I’m not big on concealer, but we all have those days of bad breakouts or dark under eye circles and that’s when the lovely Laura Mercier steps in. I am head-over-heels in love with both of these concealers; they smooth out the colors of my skin without looking like I’ve caked pounds of make-up on my face. All I need is a tiny drop to cover up a blemish, some dark-circles or unsightly redness. I use Secret Camoflauge under my eyes and the Silk Créme Foundation for everything else…although sometimes I combine the two.

Cheeks:

I use NARS Laguna Bronzer everyday. It adds just the right amount of shimmer and glow to my skin without looking like I painted my face orange. On days when I feel like doing a bit more I’ll use the Topshop Brighten stick on my cheek bones (and sometimes under the arch of my eyebrows) or Benetint to add a little rouge to the apples of my cheeks.

Eyes:

Now, this is an area of cosmetics I care a lot about. I hardly go a day without applying GloMinerals eyeliner in Espresso and using my Shu Uemura eyelash curler before applying DiorShow waterproof mascara. If you don’t own any GloMinerals eyeliner take my word for it when I say you had better buy some right away. I’ve tried a gazillion different kinds of eyeliner and none has stayed on so well without smudging or ending up all over my face than this one by GloMinerals. As I’ve said before I also really like doing cat eye make-up (see here) and find that L’Oreal Precise Liquid Liner is easy to put on and lasts all day. And while I’m not a huge fan of eyeshadow, NARS’s dual eyeshadow in Cardura adds a perfect golden shimmer of glamor to any look.

Lips:

I’ve been wearing lipstick since I was tall enough to reach into my Mom’s make-up drawer, but the one color that has stuck by my side for years upon years is Gipsy by NARS. It’s that perfect color of raspberry red that works both day and night. Lipstick has a tendency to make my lips chapped and dry so I always put on Revlon Moon Drops Lip Conditioner first. And to keep that moisture going I not only apply a thick coat of Aquaphor to my lips every night before bed but I also never leave home without a tube or tub in my bag. This stuff cures all. I also love Chanel Lèvres Scintallantes Glossimer in Rose Dilemma - don’t be fooled by its hot pink color, it’s actually a soft pink that looks dewy and natural when applied.

And that my friends, is a beauty WRAP!

Vanity

Growing up I had the most beautiful vintage white vanity in my room that was surrounded by mirrors and drawers filled with stick-on earrings and fake make-up. But regardless of the fact that my old-fashioned perfume bottles had never seen a drop of perfume and my nail polish was that non-toxic peel-off kind, I would still spend hours primping and fussing in front of the vanity’s mirrors. I haven’t had a vanity since I was about eleven years old, but have always loved the idea of having a specific station for my make-up, jewelry, hair products and other bits and baubles.

I’ve been  considering re-arranging my apartment for a few months now and am wondering if it’s possible to fit a vanity in somewhere. Although I should probably focus on fitting a desk (see here) in first, right?

Here are some inspiring vanities that currently have me re-working my living space:
