Everything Counts

November 15, 2011

I enjoy dressing in swamp tones, as is made apparent by this earth hued outfit I threw together yesterday (complete with scarab beetle necklace). Ever since I nixed my bad habit of spray tanning after senior year of high school (orange just isn’t a good everyday color for me), I’ve learned to embrace my pale post-summer complexion and as a result, consistently dress in rich, dark colors.

These J Brand jeans arrived on my doorstep a few weeks ago and I’ve worn them half a dozen times ever since. While I normally only really wear black jeans, I was surprised by the versatility of this dark green pair. What’s even better is that with every pair sold, 100% of the net proceeds will be donated to City Year in their efforts to prevent high school dropouts. Had it not been for my high school experience I could still be frequenting the fake tanning salon and looking like an oompa loompa!

Survival of the Fittest

September 7, 2011

It’s that time of year again! This Fashion Week is probably going to be my craziest yet but I can’t wait to see all the new collections and some familiar faces that I really only see during this time of year.

As with every Fashion Week, I try to be as prepared as possible (I’m laughing at myself right now for even saying that because no matter how organized I am, something always happens…here’s to wishful thinking!).

The most important thing for me this coming week is what I’m carrying in my bag, be it technology devices (the iPad is my saving grace) or the multitude of bandaids I carry for those bound-to-happen blisters. Since I’m going to be pretty swamped for the next 7 days I’ve scheduled posts so things will remain normal over here on Runway Hippie. But! If you want to follow me on a daily basis around Fashion Week I’ll be manning the ropes over on Modelinia!

Angels on the Runway

November 9, 2010

Tomorrow is the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (see my review from last year here), otherwise known as the biggest runway show in fashion…or…a runway full of the world’s most beautiful women half naked. It seems that with each year the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show gets that much bigger and more extravagant and this year is no exception. According to Modelinia there are going to be even more over-sized wings flying down the runway and Adriana Lima is set to wear a bra worth two million dollars in diamonds and jewels.

I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to harness on one of those extra heavy sets of wings and try to keep my composure in a next-to-nothing outfit while walking down a catwalk in front of hundreds of people…it’s no wonder these women are called “supermodels”.  Indeed, in a recent New York Times article, Guy Trebay notes that these angels are about as rare to the human population as a unicorn sighting in Central Park…

I can’t wait to see the new faces to the VS Angel line-up and how the designers up their incredible creations from last year. But until I can see the ensembles that grace this year’s runway I thought I’d pull together some of my favorite looks from seasons past.

Ready, Set…GO!

September 9, 2010

Today is New York Fashion Week’s official kick off and I’m both extremely excited and admittedly, a little nervous! Although I’ve worked fashion week several times before, this season my schedule is much busier and I’m sure I’m not alone when I express my apprehension about it being held in Lincoln Center this year. I had finally figured out the ins and outs of Bryant Park (i.e. where to grab a quick bite, the best place for coffee, and the easiest way to get through the crowds) and I could literally walk two feet out the front door of my apartment, hop on the subway, and arrive two feet from the entrance at Bryant Park.  Talk about convenience. But enough with this pessimism. It’s fashion week and it’s time to get amped!

While I’ve already gone through the check list that I made last season, I’ve made a few necessary additions to the list to ensure that I have as stress free a week as possible.

1. Making a Model “Face Book” – Let’s be honest, new faces pop-up in the modeling industry on what seems like a daily basis. Sure, you have your superstar names like Lily Donaldson, Chanel Iman and Alessandra Ambrosio, but what about all those other girls that are making their debut on the NYFW runways? Since I’m working with Modelinia again this season, I’ve decided that the best way to memorize all these new names and faces is to make a book featuring their pictures, names and a short bio – aka a Model Face Book.

2. Stocking the Kitchen - I’m not sure what I was thinking last season, but for some reason I thought I’d have time to sit down and eat a meal all throughout fashion week. Boy, was I wrong. I was basically running from show to show shoveling a sandwich down my throat, praying that little dribbles of mustard or lettuce wouldn’t fall on my outfit. But that won’t be happening this time, no sir! I’ve stocked my kitchen with easy snacks that I can throw in my bag and eat without needing a napkin, or let’s face it…a bib. Protein bars, string cheese, carrots, and the like will be my fashion week diet. But rest assured I’ll definitely be taking myself out to a scrumptious meal after the whole thing is over.

3. The Giant Bag – I already carry a sufficient amount of stuff in my bag on a daily basis, but when I’m running around NYC all day from show to show there are a few more necessary items that I need throughout the day. As much as I’d like to carry a small bag or clutch around, there’s no way in hell I’d be able to survive an entire day of fashion shows with just my wallet, cellphone and keys.  Along with the aforementioned items, I carry an extra pair of shoes, my camera(s), notebook, snacks, water, and gift bag treats, so obviously the bigger the bag the better.

I will try and post on Runway Hippie as frequently as possible throughout fashion week but I may miss a few days here and there. But I promise to be back with lots of stories and pictures of all my experiences! And be sure to check out my updates on Modelinia!

And now, off to the shows!
