Wildcard

January 16, 2012

Since this weekend was full of sleeping bag coats (hello freezing temperatures), football gear (go niners), and cozy sweatshirts (love those hoodies), I decided to toss in a wildcard and get a bit more dressed up on Sunday night. Pairing perhaps the world’s most unexpectedly versatile blouse with some figure flattering skinny jeans, a sparkly clutch and Roberto Cavalli heels, I felt like I was having a Carrie Bradshaw moment ready to take New York by storm and hit up one of those notorious Sex and the City clubs (can I reference this show enough?). Instead I ventured to the Upper East Side and promptly slipped back into sweats to watch the Golden Globes. Though a bold attempt, sometimes a weekend commands comfy clothing and there ain’t nothin’ wrong with that.

Festive Nails

November 15, 2010

Essie Top Coat $8; Nicole by OPI in ‘Kiss Me at Midnight’; L.A. Girl FLARE in ‘Red Sparkle’ $2.50 •

Nail polish is one of the best ways to embrace transitioning seasons. In spring I veer toward feminine pastels, summer calls for salmony pinks and coraly reds, and the fall and winter are perfect for warm grays and deep reds. This season however I’ve really been feeling glittery nails. Not only do they add a little sparkle to my everyday looks, but they are just the right touch of twinkle to get me that much more excited about the fast approaching holiday season.

For this set of sparkly nails I started with two coats of “Kiss Me at Midnight”, one of the latest holiday colors for Nicole by OPI. After that I used “Red Sparkle” by L.A. Girl Flare which is a festive mix of glittery red and silver. Lastly, to smooth everything out I finished with “Top Coat” by Essie which goes on smoothly and is relatively chip resistant. While I’m totally into this current nail color, I can’t wait to try out some other combinations once this starts chipping.

Nailed It

May 7, 2010

Ever since I was a little girl I have loved playing around with nail polish. My obsession started when I was given a book full of nail design ideas as well as an assortment of “peel-off” nail polish; but once I realized that the peel-off polish came off within seconds I was onto the real stuff. I would have my friends over and we would spend hours painting each others nails, never satisfied with just one color.

Once this phase passed, I was onto Hard Candy nail polish; not necessarily because of the array of bright colors, but because of the trendy plastic rings that came with the bottle. You weren’t cool unless you were wearing atleast two of these rings.

Then something happened… I stopped wearing fun and ridiculous shades of nail polish.  All I seemed to be wearing was a couple of variations on bright red! BLASPHEMY. Thankfully, this boring phase only lasted a few years. While I’d like to think that I was the sole reason I started wearing bright colors again, I’m going to have to give props to my friend Claire who randomly started getting her nails airbrushed with wild designs in high school.

Now I can’t seem to get enough of brightly colored nails, and I know I’m not the only one. Pastel, neon, even hologram nails are popping up all over magazines and style blogs. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy a basic red or pink, but adding some turquoise or neon purple into the mix never hurt anyone!

Essie is definitely my favorite brand of nail polish. The color assortment is endless, it goes on smoothly, and is pretty much chip proof… unless you bite your nails like me. The summer collection comes out on June 1st and I can’t wait to try out some of the new colors.

current obsession: CHANEL Jade Nail Polish

I just bought the latest Chanel Jade nail polish and I can’t wait to paint it on tonight. I love that nail colors aside from the typical reds, pinks and browns are becoming more of a trend this season. This color is the perfect pastel for autumn weather, it’s just warm enough that it doesn’t scream Easter sunday.
