The Perfect Climate

March 28, 2012

So much for spring that feels like summer! The temperatures have dropped drastically this week and I’m back to layering and bundling up; but I’m channeling my stubborn side during this coldfront and refuse to break my puffer coat out. Instead, I’m making full use of the transitional pieces in my wardrobe that will inevitably be pushed aside in the next week or so when the city sizzles up in a heat wave again.

Meet the winter accessories combined with fall necessities like a cozy sweater and lightweight jacket look. The combination of the two is what I like to call the San Francisco Style Syllabus – I actually just made that up, but float with me on this one. As a San Francisco native, I’m used to temperatures hanging out around 50-60 degrees with a crisp Pacific windchill. Such climates allow for a flexible wardrobe that has no regard for seasons – see me back in June circa 2003 wearing a mini skirt and down bomber jacket…awkward good times! So, while other New Yorkers grab their puffer jackets and Uggs, I thrive in the knowledge that I’ll be in my ideal climate with the ability to wear pretty much anything in my closet; kind of like a polar bear that’s run away from the zoo and found his way back to the snowy North Pole. Perfection.

I like this weather so much I broke out in a tabletop tap dance…

Repeat Offender

March 26, 2012

This is essentially just a spring rendition of my go-to uniform consisting of a tailored blazer, comfy t-shirt, skinny jeans and a pair of ankle boots; simple, easy, and effortless both in mind and silhouette. Ever since I brought white jeans back into my life, I can’t get enough of them! While I can only really wear them once before having to put them in the wash – such is the life of a New Yorker with a cuddly dog –  I’ve found that I reach for them almost as often as I reach for my black skinny jeans, and we all know how much I love those.

As I continue to pack for my big move and am forced to divide my wardrobe into pieces that I’ll wear to pieces that can be put away in a box, these white jeans will most certainly stay on the top of my suitcase. But the point of buying clothes is to love them and wear them, so I have no shame in knowing I’ll be victim to some outfit repeats in the next two weeks.

Wardrobe Game-Changer

February 29, 2012

This blazer is a wardrobe game-changer. At first glance you might be wondering what on earth a rabbit hole is doing dangling around my thighs, but allow me to explain. Along with adding a modern touch to an otherwise standard piece (it actually kind of reminds me of Kimberly Ovitz), this rabbit hole makes it possible for me to wear this blazer in at least five different ways. Slipping an arm through the hole suddenly turns the blazer into an elegantly sexy blouse, while putting my head through it adds an entirely new and structured look. Pure architectural genius.

I decided to wear it in its most simple format the other day, but stay tuned for a post where I show you all the different ways it can be worn!

Come Together

February 21, 2012

Here’s a fun little fact about this outfit: the skirt I’m wearing is actually extremely high-waisted (as in it sits right below my bra) and also comes with suspenders. All good things, but not something I want all the time. This is where the enjoyed but mostly hated crop top comes in.

I got this shirt back in December and have been trying to figure out how to wear it! Yes, it’s a basic, long-sleeve tee with an awesome wolf graphic at first sight,  but it also happens to be on the shorter, upper-navel side of the spectrum and has a boat neck which is difficult to layer if you’ve got some rhymes-with-cubes.

In another tale where two unexpected pieces find themselves a perfect match, my once outlandish high-waisted suspender skirt and my navel-bearing wolf top come together to create an understated, simple, and casual look. Just toss in an oversize jacket, pair of booties and a smidge of color on your lips (I chose e.l.f. Conditioning Lip Balm in Romantic Rouge), and boom! you’re ready to go!

Orange You Glad

February 6, 2012

I’ve taken my obsession with monochromatic dressing to the next level with outfits composed of pieces derived from a similar color palette. Dressing in related color tones that aren’t so matchy matchy is an easy way to look not so standard while still wearing pretty standard pieces. Here you see me all oranged up, resembling some kind of fall foliage or cherry tomato mixture,  but note this my friends: I’m still wearing my usual silky blouse + skinny jeans combo. Ain’t nothin fancy shmancy about that! This is what we call attainable fashion people, attainable fashion. Also note that dressing in a tomato-based color palette allows you to eat and spill as many tomato-based meals as you like without winding up looking like a Jackson Pollock. Major plus for those of you who are clumsy like me or use your outfits as a napkin.
