{ All Wrapped Up }

I recently had a reader ask me what outfit is my favorite on my blog. I had no idea how to respond, so I did what any good cartoon character would do and scratched my head for quite some time. I came to the bald spot conclusion, that I really don’t have a favorite – kind of like cheese; they all taste good to me, though some are better than others depending on the day.

So much of this blog is about being honest about what I’m wearing — I really try not to put together outfits for the sake of them going on here (though there have been a few times where I’ve done s0). But since you asked, dear reader, here are a few of my current favorites (with links to their respective posts) on this rainy Wednesday. Or you could overlook this whole post and realize that it’s been raining in NYC for 23209204983230 days, leaving outdoor photo shoots pretty much out of the question.

Though last week’s rain stayed far away, this weekend was completely gray and overcast, preventing any sunkissed outdoor fiestas and super moon gazing from happening. As someone with a bit of an obsession with the moon (and fiestas), you can only imagine my disappointment (huge thank you to some of my readers for sending me photos of the super moon from where you are!); so I compensated for the lack of sunshine and giant moon glow by throwing together a midday fancy shmancy outfit with a sparkly clutch that reflects everything. Who needs a super moon when you’ve got dozens of mini moons on your bag?

And while the fun outfit was definitely a pick-me-up, it wasn’t long before I was back in jeans and a t-shirt for some quesadilla eating and margarita drinking — both of which played a crucial part in making up for the solar system’s NYC absence.

So much for spring that feels like summer! The temperatures have dropped drastically this week and I’m back to layering and bundling up; but I’m channeling my stubborn side during this coldfront and refuse to break my puffer coat out. Instead, I’m making full use of the transitional pieces in my wardrobe that will inevitably be pushed aside in the next week or so when the city sizzles up in a heat wave again.

Meet the winter accessories combined with fall necessities like a cozy sweater and lightweight jacket look. The combination of the two is what I like to call the San Francisco Style Syllabus – I actually just made that up, but float with me on this one. As a San Francisco native, I’m used to temperatures hanging out around 50-60 degrees with a crisp Pacific windchill. Such climates allow for a flexible wardrobe that has no regard for seasons – see me back in June circa 2003 wearing a mini skirt and down bomber jacket…awkward good times! So, while other New Yorkers grab their puffer jackets and Uggs, I thrive in the knowledge that I’ll be in my ideal climate with the ability to wear pretty much anything in my closet; kind of like a polar bear that’s run away from the zoo and found his way back to the snowy North Pole. Perfection.

I like this weather so much I broke out in a tabletop tap dance…

After almost four years in my current apartment, I’ve finally made the commitment to move. Today I sign a lease for my new apartment in Brooklyn!

As excited as I am to move into my new abode (room as a closet y’all, room.as.a.closet.), I admit I’m a little sad to be saying goodbye to the place I’ve called home these last few years. So much has happened to me since I moved into my current place — I started this blog, I got Finn, I wrote my first published print article while sitting on the hardwood floor, friendships have come and gone, a pigeon flew into my room…forget that last one — and truth be told, I feel like I’ll be leaving a little part of me behind once I hand my key back.

But such is life and I’m ready for some new beginnings, which I can already feel tingling at my fingertips. So as I say goodbye to one part of my life and welcome another, I’d like to give a little cyber champagne toast to all of you for sticking with me throughout. Now, onto the next chapter!

Behold the quintessential all black New Yorker outfit. No, not necessarily “exciting” (hey, Rooney Mara gets away in all black all the time!), but when you’re hitting the pavement searching for apartments all day you gotta go with something that provides at least one of the following: comfort, functionality, and spandex. I went with all three.

There’s something to be said for all black ensembles (though I’ve said it before here and here…and here…), for though they can at first appear Boring with a capital B, you’ll soon learn that it’s all about the details.

Take these pants that want to call themselves leggings. Leather paneling on the front, stretchy spandex in the back, thus separating them from the Ugg boots and sorority sweatshirt requirements — or so I like to think. Then you have the sweater – which isn’t really pictured here as it was too cold to remove my sleeping bag parka and I was suffering from a caffeine high (see penguin photo below) – featuring the wonderful inside-out look where hemlines and seams get a standing ovation. And lastly, the shoes. I’ve wanted wedged sneakers since Spice World came out and my Mom refused to buy them for me. Well look at me now, Ma! Wedge sneakers on me feets!

And there you have it; a basic outfit that gets its thrills in the details. Note: colorful nails and some jewelry always help, too!

I call this outfit Laundry Day because all of my everyday staples were in the wash and this is what I came up with. Laundry day mornings are significantly more difficult than normal mornings because you’re forced to dress outside of your comfort zone. This can result in some seriously atrocious outfits (I’m looking at you crop-top + leggings disaster), but it can also create some prettaaay prettaaay prettaaaay (any other Larry David fans out there?) great outfits as well.

I had completely forgotten about these Theyskens’ Theory jeans until they toppled on top of me while I was grabbing for one of my way too many pairs of black jeans the other morning. I was also finally forced to forgo my go to sweaters and silk blouses and reintroduce a spring tank top that was at one point a recurring star in my daily outfit rotations. Isn’t it funny how an article of clothing that you swore you’d never stop wearing ultimately finds its way to the very back of your closet? I always kind of feel bad for those pieces but I guess clothes don’t have feelings; and it’s a good thing they don’t because I throw way too many of them on the floor on laundry days…

It currently feels like the start of Spring in New York, which of course gives me anxiety because you just know there’s going to be a giant snowstorm in the middle of Fashion Week, but I have my fingers and toesies and eyeballs crossed that the crisp, sunny weather sticks like the snow should be doing right about now.

Though I’ve been staring longingly out the window at the perfect weather while being chained to my desk with Fashion Week prep, this week has been surprisingly manageable (calm before the snow storm?). This weekend however, is going to be one giant whirlwind as I finalize schedules, attend a few fittings, start my apartment search (wh0 slipped me those crazy pills, honestly?), and of course, the Super Bowl, otherwise known as nachos fest. I’m hoping to get a bit of rest in there somewhere because there’s no need to get bags under my eyes before Fashion Week, since it’s pretty good at doing that for me by day 3. God, I love Fashion Week season!

I know you guys were expecting a “Week in Review” for today, but let’s mix things up shall we?

Ok. Here we go!

The first store on my Mastercard Priceless New York shopping tour list is Flying A, where affordable casual chic jeans, jackets, and jumpers hangout with 1960s boho dresses and romper boots. I admittedly had never heard of this store before but now have it wedged into my hefty list of must-stop Soho shops. I must have tried on over eight pairs of their colorful denim this past weekend and am still cursing myself for not buying a pair of Pour la Victoire chestnut brown boots. Another item on my “curse myself for not buying” list are some ridiculously cute necklaces with teeny tiny animal charms (and when I say teeny tiny I mean it – a little piggy’s tail was less than a centimeter long!). As much as I try to convince myself that my style is sophistication at it’s finest, I have a serious weakness for cute animal accessories. Luckily, now that Flying A is on my radar I’ll have plenty of other opportunities to buy the aforementioned boots and necklaces and all those other pieces I deem as “necessities.”

Since this weekend was full of sleeping bag coats (hello freezing temperatures), football gear (go niners), and cozy sweatshirts (love those hoodies), I decided to toss in a wildcard and get a bit more dressed up on Sunday night. Pairing perhaps the world’s most unexpectedly versatile blouse with some figure flattering skinny jeans, a sparkly clutch and Roberto Cavalli heels, I felt like I was having a Carrie Bradshaw moment ready to take New York by storm and hit up one of those notorious Sex and the City clubs (can I reference this show enough?). Instead I ventured to the Upper East Side and promptly slipped back into sweats to watch the Golden Globes. Though a bold attempt, sometimes a weekend commands comfy clothing and there ain’t nothin’ wrong with that.

We all know how much I love me some monochromatic looks, so naturally when I purchased this pair of Current/Elliott jeans I knew it was only a matter of time before I dabbled in the burgundy/red mash up (*note: this could also be because I’m not drinking this month and am admittedly having some red wine withdrawls).

I threw this outfit together in the very last minute before a brunch with some friends on Sunday and have to say, I’m quite pleased with the results (which is a rarity when I just throw a few pieces together without so much as a glance in the mirror). Now I know what you’re all thinking, “Sonia, you need to stop wearing those Acne boots, it’s getting old,” and I hear you, I really do. But here’s the thing, I CAN’T STOP! They are hands down the best shoes I have ever owned and it’s a daily struggle not to wear them all the time, even though it already seems like I do. They’re like the black skinny jeans of shoes in my wardrobe – just when I think I’m ready to move on, I slip them on and poof! my outfit is 1,323,252,313 times better than it was before.
