Route Button-Down

I have an obsession with button-down shirts. Leave a few buttons unbuttoned and you’re one sexy mama, button them to the top and you’re lady prim-and-proper! And the best part is that you can essentially have an entire costume change without ever having to actually change your clothes.
Many years ago, I was hanging out with an ex-boyfriend while wearing a silky white button-down unbuttoned just enough to reveal my bra. We had plans to meet his mom for dinner that night and he took one look at the bra poking out of my shirt and said “you’re not going to go meet my mom like that are you?” I laughed the mighty laugh of confidence (actually I’m pretty sure I wiped away a tear, but that’s neither here nor there) and buttoned up my blouse to it’s tippidy top revealing a whole new, mother-friendly Sonia!
So for those of you meeting your significant other’s parents this holiday season, I highly recommend going the button-down route. Just don’t wear white cause you’re probably going to be at a dinner and risk the potential of a cocktail sauce stain.

A Living

I often get emails asking me a) what I do for a living outside my blog and b) how I dress for my job. Today I shall answer these questions for you.
a) For a long time I worked full time on my blog and did freelance writing on the side. It wasn’t until a little over a year ago that I decided to venture away from my pajamas all day freelance lifestyle to work in an office. I am currently the Editorial Director of a fashion site based in New York City. And if you’re now wondering how I manage to do both, allow me to confirm that I often pressed for time; hence the question in yesterday’s post regarding covering up under eye circles.
b) This is a pretty standard outfit for my day job: jeans, blazer, some kind of heel. Though to be honest a lot of the outfits I share on here are what I wear to work. I may dress things up if there are important meetings that day, but for the most part I’d say this is my “working girl uniform.” You should see what I wear after midnight…just kidding.

Bell Bottom Sensations

I’ve been really feeling flared jeans lately. While I’ve worn them a few times before (see here and here), it’s only recently that they’ve become an everyday grab. Along with adding significant length to the legs (when worn with heels), they also have the perfect combination of relaxed comfort and sleek silhouette. I also personally enjoy the swishy swishy feel they make when walking – if you look down as you walk the bell goes front and back like a swing – swishy swishy. I totally recognize that the previous sentence is odd and I may be the only one who gets that sensation when wearing bell bottoms, but if you do get what I’m saying then I give you a cyber high-five.
I’m still experimenting with different flared denim looks and would love your input! Do I go big and do the whole floppy hat shebangle or should I keep with the more refined ensemble? Tell me pwease! Other suggestions welcome, too!

Casper Pants

Back when I first moved to New York and was looking for apartments, I made the mistake of wearing white jeans while on the hunt and wound up coming home with the back half of my pants speckled with gray dirt and dust. Granted it had rained the night before, but still, I was totally grossed out and took a major hiatus from casper pants (not to be mistaken with the casper pale skin I’m currently sporting).
In the past year I have welcomed white jeans back into my life with open legs arms and am happy to say that this featured pair of Rag & Bone leg casings skinnies have only suffered one speckle of grey dirt because of Finn‘s post dog park paws. Thankfully, there’s this amazing potion called bleach that works like a fairy godmother’s magic wand. Zap! Zing! Stain be gone!

*Another Editors Note: Am I seriously that big of a loser?
*Yes.

Embracing Pastels

Holy mackerel! I’m wearing pink again. Albeit a light pink, but still a girly hue that is almost as absent in my closet as a pair of ballet flats (which happen to not exist in my closet; FYI). I can say with complete and utter honesty that the last time I wore pink as the focal part of an outfit was last summer (see here). It’s not that I don’t like the color pink — hell, my room is pink! — but I just dont identify with the color from a sartorial stand point.
I picked up this pair of pink pastel jeans at a 7 For All Mankind event earlier this week, knowing they’d be a challenge but determined to embrace this spring’s trendy ice cream color palette. It wasn’t easy venturing away from my darker pieces, but I ultimately went with an overall pale ensemble, which felt fitting for the 60° weather we’ve been having these past few days. I admit I didn’t really feel 100% like myself while wearing this outfit, but it was a welcome change and I plan to continue exploring lighter hues until they feel juuuuuust right.
