Neon in the Sixties

February 21, 2013

Ted2

I have a long list of style icons. Jane Birkin, Bianca Jagger, Kate Moss, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Jimi Hendrix, and so on and so forth. But never in my life have I looked at a photo of style legend, Jackie O and thought, “yes, I would like to dress like that.” Don’t worry, I can already feel your outrage through the computer from this previous statement, but this is an issue I need to address as I’m fairly certain my beliefs have changed.

Until recently, I’ve always found Jackie O’s style to be a little too stuffy for me. Turtlenecks, skirt suits, silk taffeta dresses complete with a bow — none of those really scream “Sonia”. Indeed, had I lived during her era I would have likely been seen in high-waisted flared jeans and a variety of ponchos giving too many peace signs while cruising around in my light pink Volkswagon Beetle. And while today I may still be seen wearing high-waisted flared jeans next to my friend’s newer Beetle model, I’m starting to think that the other side of the spectrum, a.k.a. Jackie O’s skirt suits, don’t sound all that bad. Cue the “you’re getting older” remarks.

I’ve been aware of my growing sartorial maturity over the past few months, but it was really brought to my attention when I visited Ted Baker a few weeks ago. Upon arrival in their three-story-and-then-some store, I B-lined for pastel pink tailored suits, cropped jackets, box pleat skirts, and even a head-to-toe flamingo print ensemble (yes, that exists; and yes, you should get it). I walked out of the store with a neon orange cropped jacket and a box pleat piano keyboard skirt (both of which you see here), thinking I’d nabbed the edgier pieces from the assortment I tried on. But then my friend Anna told me it was very “Jackie O.”

This conjured a visceral defensive remark from me. “Jackie O would never wear neon orange,” I said, confidence oozing out of me like a math whiz in AP Calculus. However, once I got over my initial and I admit, immature, response, I realized Jackie O very well could have worn neon orange had neon orange been considered a wearable color then. Indeed, I have no doubts that she would wear neon orange were she alive today — she did love color after all — and I can even imagine her wearing an outfit quite similar to this one from Ted Baker. Though lets be honest, she would have looked ten billion times more glamorous than me, complete with those signature oversize sunglasses.

So, getting back to the potentiality of Jackie O. being introduced to my list of “style icons,” I conclude that yes, she makes the cut. Will I reject the ripped up jeans and tattered tees in my closet? No. But let’s be real here, no one ever really saw what Jackie wore behind closed doors.

Bee to a Sandwich

December 12, 2012

Orange is a recurring color/theme on here, but I wouldn’t even consider it one of my favorite colors (for those of you wondering, my favorite color is green). There’s something about the inevitable orange pop(!) that draws me to it like a bee to a sandwich.

As I’ve mentioned, bright and bold accessories are a must for those dreary outfits (read: fat days when you want to wear black from head to toe). You may feel like shit about your look, but I guarantee people will notice your bright accessories before they notice your bland outfit (read: fupa). But back to the color orange…

The citrus color plays an integral role in our lives beyond the world of OJ (not Simpson) and vitamin C. Construction sites use the standout color to say “don’t fucking walk in here”; it’s become one of the two colors of Halloween and Thanksgiving due to the pumpkin factor; prisoners usually wear the color so they’re easily spottable if trying to escape; it’s the color of the California state poppy; Buddhist monks wear orange robes; orangutans have to wear the darn color every day; I could go on…

But obviously its most important role is providing my brain-dead, jet-lagged self with a pop of color for outfits when I have no energy to think past jeans and a white shirt.

Go Buy Now: Traffic Stopping Hats

November 15, 2012

I am a stereotypical New Yorker in the winter. I am grumpy, pushy, and have a tendency to wear black from head-to-toe (see here for proof — fyi that smile is just for show).

I’m hoping to change that a bit this year, beginning with my closet. But such sartorial changes require babysteps (no, I’m not going to go out and buy a giant red puffer jacket much to Nora Ephron’s delight). My plan of attack on the shadowy hue? Neon hats.

Yellow, pink, orange, turquoise? Don’t matta, don’t care. And since the fluorescent hue will likely stop traffic as well, I’m going to go ahead and call this a fashion move for the greater good.

On Mixing Prints, Again…

August 1, 2012

This has been one of those weeks where all my clothes end up on the floor because I can’t decide what to wear (read: sick of everything I own). Normally I would just grab a dress or plain shirt and jeans and call it a day, but this week I can’t stop pairing prints!

There really is no rule of thumb when it comes to pattern mixing — at least in my opinion. People say you should find some kind of similarity between the pieces (i.e. color, shapes, etc) but really it’s a trial and error process for me. Does this plaid shirt look good with these polka dot shorts? Can I wear a horizontal stripe skirt and vertical stripe shirt? It’s really just like a puzzle and trying to find the right pieces that go together. And maybe sometimes I look like a five year old regurgitated out of the sale rack, but I’m ok with that.

Tangerine Sharks

May 25, 2012

So I know you all are used to Friday posts being “A Week in Review,” but I gotta tell ya, I have nothing worth reviewing this week. For the first time in what seems like forever, I pretty much got to go straight home after work every day this week and it felt awesome. So instead of boring you with stories of how I spent one night building two Ikea night stands and another night eating too many martini olives – hold the martini – I thought I’d kick off the long weekend with a colorful outfit post!

Behold the first summer shorts debut on le blog. It’s always a bit daunting the first time you put on a pair of shorts because your legs are nowhere near as tan as you want them to be and you curse all those times you decided to sit on the couch with olives potato chips instead of going on a run. But these Low-Rise Cut Off Shorts in Tangerine by J Brand are too good to leave sitting on the  shelf, regardless of the fact that it’s been pouring rain in New York this entire week.

And that is where I leave you. Have a fantastic long weekend!
