Albino Canadian Tuxedo
Ok, so we’ve seen the all white look. We’ve seen the all denim look. But put this in your pipe and smoke it ya’ll — an all white denim look with a splash of bleached chambray! Are you freaking out? Cause I’m bursting at the seams and it’s not from fried food intake.
Some of you may be thinking this is complete overkill. Maybe you’re starting to question me as a a source of style inspiration. Or maybe you never regarded me as such in the first place. That’s fine. I hate you. Just kidding. I love you. But let’s get back to deciding whether or not this outfit combination is awesome or flawsome.
First of all, it is a lot of white, I’ll admit that. It’s also a lot of denim, I’ll admit that as well. But with both white and denim being so high on the trend-o-sphere these days, why not combine them as we do so many other of-the-moment things? Like mismatched prints. And computer glasses. And Labradoodles. We’re living in a world of meta, so why not embrace it?
When mixed together, an all white denim look is actually quite liberating — even with the high risk potential of food and/or monthly cycle stains. While you’re getting the crisp chicness of the all white look (like this classy broad), you’re also getting the comfortable durability of denim (like Cool Hand Luke). Can’t you just hear Levi Strauss jumping up and down for joy in his grave?
Is this something I’ll reach for as frequently as I do the standard Canadian tuxedo? Probably not. Mainly because the albino Canadian tuxedo just doesn’t come in as many shades. But that’s neither here nor there. What’s here is that this outfit is refreshing in the way that freshly squeezed orange juice is refreshing after you’ve been drinking Tropicana for several months. What’s there is that I’m dubbing the albino Canadian tuxedo awesome, and that’s worth doing a jig over.
Boom.

The Beauty of the Suit

Allow me to make a generalization: I have often thought mens clothing to be very boring. Obviously the likes of Simon Doonan, Hamish Bowles, and Johnny Depp are excluded from this proclamation, but given the “everyday man” in his suit and tie (hey Justin!), there’s just not a lot there. Or so I thought.
In the last year however, I have accumulated several suits. Plaid, velvet, grey, and black, these coordinated two-pieces have become my sartorial savior in many a fashion bind. Do I wear them together all the time? No. But neither do men. I have seen my brother pair his grey blazer with jeans, his matching grey slacks with a navy sweater, and I have also seen him wear both pieces at the same time with a crisp button-down and tie. So much versatility with just two key pieces! Bananas!
As a preview to one of next week’s post, I have decided to show a not so neutral suit that pairs with essentially everything in any girls wardrobe. Here we go:
Behold the above image — a suit paired together for the classy, work-focused lady. With a silky white button-down, standard black pumps, and a slightly eccentric necklace, this girl could easily be going to the office or attending happy hour with friends; my guess is she’s the white wine type.
Below we have the cool girl who probably lives somewhere in Brooklyn or the East Village. She works at a creative ad agency, has a lot of guy friends, and has one of those sexy raspy voice because she likes to smoke Parliament Lights in between glasses of Jameson on the rocks. Her laid back t-shirt and beat up chucks may give off the vibe that she’s messy, but M-F she’s got her head in the game as is evident by her designer bag.

Then we have the California transplant (or maybe she lives in LA right now, but I’m in New York and I just picture her here). Never one to let go of her easy breezy Pacific lifestyle, she’s brought all her doily vintage inspired dresses with her. But to add a bit of edge to her west-coast-best-coast flair, she tosses in a bold lip and cozy flannel to fight off that New England almost-spring air.

And lastly we have the mix-master who can essentially wear anything and look put together; which also happens to be the beauty of the suit. Here we have the grunge factor — flannel, boyfriend tee, converse — but the combo of the tailored blazer and matching trousers make her look like the type of person who would leave a note if she hit your car pulling into a parking spot. She also probably has a really hot boyfriend, which is where she got that boyfriend shirt and flannel. Just sayin’.

Pink & Purple
I used to be the cynical type that wanted to burn every Valentine’s Day aficionado who came in my direction. Even in relationships I acted like I could care less about this day. But let’s be honest, what girl doesn’t want flowers, chocolates, or in my personal case, a giant bowl of guacamole?
So, a few years ago I decided to kill off my cynical “woe is me, I hate this hallmark day” self, and adopt a more festive and optimistic me. I get into the spirit of every other holiday (Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Fourth of July…I even wear a shirt with a giant photo of my mom on Mother’s Day. Just kidding.), so why not embrace Valentine’s Day as well.
So here I am, dressed in head-to-toe pink and purple ready to stuff my face with Mexican food tonight. Because that’s just how I roll on Valentine’s Day. More on that in a post later today though…stay tuned.

Unplanned Perfection
When I was packing for San Francisco a few weeks ago, I threw these pants in at the last minute (literally, it was 5:15am and my limo driver was downstairs waiting for me) knowing that they didn’t really “go” with any of the other pieces I’d packed for my trip.
I’m a bit notorious for these last minute throw-ins, particularly when I have hardly any room left in my suitcase. When I was a little girl, these additions were in the form of stuffed animals, troll dolls, and maybe an extra set of plastic pearls. You know, the essentials. Today however, I’ve traded in my extra teddy bear for a random article of clothing or jewelry that has nothing to do with the other pieces I’ve planned so meticulously for over the past few days. And yet, without fail, these eleventh hour extras end up being the first thing I go to upon arrival.
Having no prepared outfit for these Clover Canyon pants ended up being a blessing, as it allowed me to mix-and-match my look without the shadow of a planned outfit hanging over me. I’d always imagined myself wearing these pants with a crisp white top, this oxblood blazer, and a pair of silver stilettos, but alas none of these pieces accompanied me on my trip to SF. So, with a “don’t match, don’t care” mindset, I put on all the pieces that I actually wanted to wear that day and much to my delight found the mismatched ensemble to be an unbeatable combo.

The Color Pool
Baby blue is not a color I tend to reach for. This is mainly because people with blue eyes are always told how great they look in blue and unfortunately wearing the color brown doesn’t really yield the same response. “Hey! That’s a great color brown on you, really brings out the brown in your eyes” — yeah, no, that never happens.
But when I spotted this fuzzy blue Acne sweater on sale, I just couldn’t resist. No, it didn’t “bring out my eyes” or compliment my pale skin in a particularly striking way, but it’s cozy and a refreshing change from my other go-to colors.
I’m sure there are many of you out there who swear that you can’t wear lime green or tangerine or pastels or whatever, but before you completely remove that certain hue from your wearable colors list, I suggest you test out a few shades. Some greens have a bit more grey in them, some yellows a bit more cream, and so on and so forth. I know that a cold pastel green makes me look like I’m perpetually seasick, but one with a little more yellow works on me. But for baby blue I’ve found that a more saturated shade makes me look like I’m a confused 5 year-old tomboy, while cooler shades are more flattering. So, as the spring collections start hitting stores and the inevitable springy hues dominate every rack, I suggest you try a variety of different shades instead of nixing the rack of soft pink entirely.
