For Fruits Sake!

March 13, 2013

Pear1

Pears my be one of my least favorite fruit; right up there with red apples. Unless prepared in a salad with gorgonzola, endive, and walnuts, I say no to the awkwardly shaped fruit because they are either too juicy or extra mealy. When I first saw this sweater I had mixed feelings. I obviously loved its kitschiness, but could I really promote a fruit I so openly despise? And then I realized this is just like those guys who wear baseball hats of a different team based solely on the color combination. If a Yankees fan can wear a SF Giants hat, then I can wear a god damn pear. Done deal.

So now here you see me wearing this pear-centric sweater on one of the more spring-like days we’ve had so far. There’s just something inexplicably wonderful about how kitschy tops — be it a cat, a toothy smile, or an in your face, bright yellow pear — lessen the seriousness of an outfit. Obviously wearing a giant pear shouldn’t be your go-to sweater for a job interview (unless you’re interviewing to be a babysitter in which case wear it everyday), but for those hectic errand-filled weekends when acting like an adult feels slightly exhausting, busting out something a little more playful is surprisingly refreshing. Extra points if you glue a pair of googly eyes on it.

Worth the Wait

With each season comes a trendy silhouette; the satchel bag, the ankle boot, the wide leg pajama pants, etc. And under this silhouette “umbrella” reside specific must-have items: the Mulberry ‘Alexa’ bag, the Alexander Wang bootie, the Marc Jacobs pant.

Sometimes I stand beneath this umbrella, decorating myself in as many trendy silhouettes as I (a.k.a. my bank account) can manage. Other times, I stick my nose in the air and let the rain fall in, unmoved by the current fads. And then there are those times that I am so late to the trend that I may as well have been living in a mole hole for the past few years unaware of any popular silhouettes settling beneath a season’s umbrella. Such is the case with my recent acquisition of this green parka jacket.

The selling point for me after all these years was the furry hood. I love how giant it is, and that it sits upright and perky around my shoulders (wow, it really sounds like I’m talking about an erection here, but let’s move beyond my word choice).

Growing up, I loved watching old movies with women dressed in luscious fur coats that practically engulfed them with their volume and buoyancy — kind of like a squirrel tail. So, when I saw how this fur hood encompassed its model, I knew my search for the human eating furry parka coat had come to an end.

This trend may have been around for awhile, but I’m glad I waited until I found the exact parka I was looking for.

A Week in Review

August 24, 2012

{ Typical morning blogging stance — pre coffee }

It’s officially those final days of summer and man, am I living them to their fullest (see below photo of my fridge). I rarely have a night on my couch at home and my laundry pile is so monumental it’s like the Mt. Everest for ants (note: there are no ants in my laundry).

But on top of those final days of summer being all about hanging with friends and eating until you explode (everyone else does that too, right?), my work life has been on fire as well. Today I get the first mockups of Runway Hippie’s re-design, I’ll be traveling for work in October (details soon), and I have an exciting photo shoot coming up next week! I know, I’m being vague again, but isn’t the anticipation fun?

And now the weekend.

An Old Favorite

June 21, 2012

My summer uniform is pretty much filled with simple, playful dresses that I can mindlessly throw on and be out the door in ten minutes top. I probably add at least five new dresses to my wardrobe each summer, but it’s this dress in particular that I will forever return to.

I bought it about five years ago on a trip to Bloomingdale’s with a friend who was on the hunt for a pair of sandals for a wedding. I abandoned her in the shoe department (cheesy sales people, so not my scene) and meandered around the store admiring everything but swearing that I would walk out of there empty handed. Yeah right, like that ever happens…

Before I knew it I was in the dressing room trying on jackets, pants, sweaters, shirts, skirts, dresses, etc., but nothing was appealing enough for me to seal the deal. Just as I was about to give up and go find my friend, I started rummaging through the selections that the person before me had left in the dressing room. That’s where I met this dress by Free People. Who was I to turn down a dress with a fish print on it?

I’ve since worn it to everything you could possibly imagine: music festivals, a cocktail party (just add a blazer and some heels), swimming in the ocean (not kidding), and I’ve almost always worn it with matching red nails. This year however, I decided to try it out with Sally Hansen’s Magnetic nail polish in silver, which reminds me of fish scales with its squiggles and waves. Though the polish stands out on its own, it ended up blending in perfectly with my  dress, which has me thinking I may live in this entire outfit all summer long!

Tangerine Sharks

May 25, 2012

So I know you all are used to Friday posts being “A Week in Review,” but I gotta tell ya, I have nothing worth reviewing this week. For the first time in what seems like forever, I pretty much got to go straight home after work every day this week and it felt awesome. So instead of boring you with stories of how I spent one night building two Ikea night stands and another night eating too many martini olives – hold the martini – I thought I’d kick off the long weekend with a colorful outfit post!

Behold the first summer shorts debut on le blog. It’s always a bit daunting the first time you put on a pair of shorts because your legs are nowhere near as tan as you want them to be and you curse all those times you decided to sit on the couch with olives potato chips instead of going on a run. But these Low-Rise Cut Off Shorts in Tangerine by J Brand are too good to leave sitting on the  shelf, regardless of the fact that it’s been pouring rain in New York this entire week.

And that is where I leave you. Have a fantastic long weekend!
