Overkill
If you were to ask me to define the term “overkill,” I’d say that it’s what you do with your car after you’ve *accidentally* run over an animal and want to make sure that it’s really dead. Reverse. Drive. Reverse. Drive. Over and over again. Overkill. But you would probably look at me and think, “Sonia? Seriously?” and I’d get awkward and tuck my tail between my legs. So, let’s just go with the fact that it has to do with excess, in which case you could probably dub this very outfit as overkill.
There’s an excess of neon. An excess of flowers. And an excess of me making that weird face when it’s too bright outside and I’m getting upper-lip sweat. But come on; how much is too much.
I personally love excess. I’m all in favor of monochrome outfits. The more rings on your fingers the better. And I ate pizza two nights in a row this weekend. As they say, go big or go home. If that’s not excess, then call me Tony.
Back-to-back pizza nights or a head-to-toe gingham outfit may make your toenails curl like a pig’s tail, but they happen to make mine grow into thick, healthy pieces of keratin. So with this I say that overkill is entirely subjective; though I’d still love to hear your opinions on this florals-on-acid look in the comments section below. It is also there that you can call me Tony.

NYFW SS 13 Diary – Part 2
I’ve been swept up in a tornado of Fashion Week (ironic because NYC also had a legit tornado) but now that it’s Tuesday it feels good to see the light at the end of the catwalk tunnel. And so before I go any further I would like to say: Thursday, you and I are going to enjoy a big pizza.
Here’s a recap of the first few days with both my own photos and legit runway photos that I couldn’t capture no matter how hard I tried.
Rebecca Minkoff
Ladylove Rebecca Minkoff showed a 70s inspired collection that was updated, refreshing, and 100% Sonia closet ready. White flared pants with floral brocade embellishments, slouchy shorts, vests, and breezy tunics made up the collection that will no doubt put me in major debt next season.
Rebecca Taylor
Take me back to the 80s why dontcha! Rebecca Taylor showcased a California-cool 80s girl with pops of bright orange and lavender purple in swingy silky fabrics and lots of rhinestone embellishments. She also brought back bleached chambray in the form of…wait for it…a jumpsuit, all topped off with Westward \\ Leaning reflector sunglasses. My cup o’ tang, indeed!
Suno
Every time I see Suno’s collection come down the runway I have to whisper to myself “be still, my heart.” Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis may as well have invented the print, and each season their textiles get better and better. This season was full of poppy floral prints, shimmery silks, and comfy white cottons that reminded me of the nightgowns I wore as a wee tot. I was also a huge fan of the silhouettes — crop tops (yippee!), A-line skirts (lady hips are happy), and waist-skimming blazers that I’ve seemed to start collecting from Suno. So, I’ll say it again: Be still, my heart.
Prabal Gurung
I may have been stuck behind a giant photographer at Prabal Gurung, but that didn’t prevent me from seeing the glorious details in each of Prabal’s pieces. Peplums were featured in new areas (see below the boobs), flowy chiffon was aplenty, sportswear redefined into ready-to-wear gave the collection an edgy/youthful quality, and Prabal’s signature twindly feathers decorated his ready-carpet ready dresses. What is it about feathers that just make everything so…glamourous!
MM6 Maison Martin Margiela
I had about 10 minutes to pop by this presentation, but it was enough time for me to know those frenchies do it best. Tailored denim, slouchy sweaters, shirt dresses, and midi to full-length skirts made up a collection that defines itself on only the coolest of cool.
Altuzarra
Well, Joseph Altuzarra sure knows about tailoring! This season he re-defined the blazer adding slits just below the shoulders so women can wear them as blazers, capes, or that cool over-the-shoulder editor way. Gypsy-inspired fabrics and layering was combined with engineer stripes reminiscent of the Osh Kosh overalls I wore as a youth. And before I move onto the next collection, let’s just us all take a moment to wipe up our drool from those delicious gladiator boots. THOSE BOOTS.
Catherine Malandrino Black Label
I kicked off Sunday morning with a bagel, coffee, and Catherine Malandrino, which had me rethinking my doughy everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. The bra tops, cinched-waists, and an array of fitted bodices already have me thinking next spring’s fitness routine. Sign me up for that kickboxing class because the outfit you see in the forefront shall be mine.
Derek Lam
Leather? For spring? Groundbreaking! And I’m not being the Miranda Priestly sarcastic. Derek Lam sent out sculpted, buttery soft leather in the form of crop tops and pleated skirts; and on top of that he dazzled my eyeballs with swirly, hallucination-inducing textiles in figure-flattering (hallelujah!) silhouettes. Also, I wanted to touch everything. It’s not fair to have to look at woven skirts, juicy leathers, and confetti-esque dresses coming down the runway and not be able to touch them. It felt like I was in a museum. Sound the alarms!
Tommy Hilfiger
Finally! Some buttery soft leather I could touch! Tommy Hilfiger, man of my American pride sartorial dreams, you gone done it again! This season he updated his signature preppy stripes in race car driver leathers, silky pajama suits (I never want pajamas as everyday wear to go out of style), and chunky knit sweaters that aren’t necessarily “spring” appropriate, but work if you’re the East Coast wasp sailing on a boat in Nantucket. Sign. Me. Up.

Looking Ahead

To me, the new year is about looking ahead; thinking about how you want the year to turn out, things you hope to accomplish, and of course the clothes you’re going to wear. Since fashion is always a season ahead, I’ve been sitting on my favorite trends and looks for spring since last September. Suffice it to say, my buns are sore and it’s time I stood up and shared them!
Take the floral prints above. At first all I could think was “flowers? for spring? groundbreaking.” (we all know that Devil Wears Prada quote) but then as I reexamined I realized that these aren’t your average peonies and roses, these are some crazy city chic flowers that are as vibrant as a tropical school of fish!
And while we’re on the vibrant note, let’s discuss the jazzy tinfoil treats below. I’m a big fan of metallics – on my feet, on my body, on my silverware – and I am loooovin the colorful metallic tones from last season’s runway. The holographic iridescent leather trousers from Theyskens’ Theory (second from the right) had me totally transfixed on the runway and ditto goes for the Prabal Gurung dress on the far left. Both have that sleek feminine look while still being entirely unusual and daring.

Now, I’ve never been one for pastels; they wash me out and have always felt a bit too Easter eggy for me. But oh, these cotton candy hues had me droooooling and it’s not just because I love me some cotton candy. The colors seen at 3.1 Phillip Lim, Jill Stuart, Versace, etc. had a crisper feel that made them sophisticated instead of baby-chick-in-a-basket-cheesy. Though I’ll have to see how they look on my skin tone, I’m looking forward to trying out some mint green and strawberry sorbet hues come springtime.

Give me a tribal print any day of the week and I am as happy as a beaver in a dam. Alexander Wang (far left) went the sportier route while BCBG (far right) took me on an island cruise with resort ready dresses and kaftans. And you gotta love Christopher Bailey for putting all those embellishments and rich tones on the staple Burberry trench coats! As much as I love the signature trench, it’s refreshing to see the switch up, especially with crazy collar and lining ornamentation.

Last, but certainly not least, we have the heavily structured and detailed candy colored dresses that dominated (and I mean dominated) the runways at Chanel and Louis Vuitton. Again, normally something I would shy away from, but hot diggity dog if Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty were getting dressed today this is most certainly what they’d be wearing. Between Marc Jacobs’ broderie anglaise at Louis Vuitton (far left) to the lacey details at Oscar de la Renta (center) to the razor cut outs at Valentino (far right), I’m going to have to give my spring evening attire a complete and utter makeover!

NYFW Photo Diary Numero Uno
Holy tomato. I can’t believe it’s the final day of Fashion Week! What a seven day whirlwind it’s been – bouncing around from show to show, interviewing every model in sight (check out all my reviews & interviews on Modelinia), and ending every night with either an insane amount of writing or fashion week partying. Oy! While I’ve covered Fashion Week before, this was the first time that I literally had maaaybe an hour to chill each day – and that’s pushing it.
While I can’t wait to wear flats all weekend, watch some football and have an actual sit-down meal, I’ve honestly had an amazing time. Never in a million years did I dream I’d be front row at a Jason Wu show or chatting with Karolina Kurkova backstage at Rag & Bone or being interviewed for a Today Show segment at Marchesa (tune in during the 9AM hour on Friday!) but tralala here I am! And I’ve got the dark circles and blisters on my feet to prove it!
I’m looking forward to getting back on track with my blogging (I apologize for the few days that I didn’t get anything up) and spending some quality time with friends and Mr. Finn, but I admit I’m going to miss the thrill of walking up to those tents everyday…
