The Justification Trial

December 10, 2012

How do you justify owning a certain article of clothing? Is it how often you wear it? How many outfits you can make out of it? Is it fulfilling a certain hole in your wardrobe?

I bought this blazer three years ago and can confidently say that I’ve worn it a total of four times. Should this have been a cheap purchase I wouldn’t think twice about the matter, but this Boy. By Band of Outsiders blazer made a dent in my bank account and it frustrates me that I don’t wear it more often (even though I get a tingly sensation of joy every time I put together an outfit that includes it).

But why!? Just because something costs more money doesn’t mean you have to wear it all the time, does it? Por ejemplo, the couches in my mom’s living room are way more expensive than the ones in our den, and I don’t hear her barking about which seat has a deeper butt imprint.

So I come back to my initial question, how do you justify owning a piece of clothing? I believe that the justification of a purchase is entirely different from the justification of owning it. Because while you may have gone through your purchasing checklist at check out, the way the piece translates into your “real life” could be drastically different (i.e. this blazer).

A Week in Review

October 26, 2012

Amazing launch party for Margiela x H&M

Due to my schedule and kerbobbled brain, keeping a routine isn’t all that easy for me. It’s like women who are able to keep their purses clean and organized. Their cosmetics are kept in a cute little case, their pens (yes, they remember to carry pens) are placed strategically in a side pocket for easy access, and their cell phone most likely sits in the cell phone compartment that seems to be present in almost every tote these days. I am not this person. I have receipts everywhere, old broken cigarettes, and mooshed up chapstick buried in the bottom of my purses. Every once in awhile I’ll do a clean up and I try to keep that going for as long as possible but let’s be real here, give me two weeks and it’s back to stage 1 chewed gum in the gum wrapper.

This week I did a figurative “purse clean” on my life. I made it my goal to recreate a schedule, actually wake up with my alarm(s), and accomplish enough each day so that I could go to bed relatively stress free. It hasn’t been easy (that snooze button is just too tempting!), but I’m already starting to feel better, despite the nasty cold I picked up somewhere between the L train and East 53rd Street.

I often have to remind myself that I operate better with an organized schedule, which is half the reason why I started A Week in Review. It’s a way for me (and you!) to look back at the week and it’s accomplishments as well as put some closure on everything before the weekend. Here’s to hoping this kind of organization lasts me through this weekend’s Halloween activities; though if I wake up Monday morning with candy wrappers in my purse I won’t complain.

On the Hunt, Again

July 19, 2012

Ok, remember how amazing you guys were when I was on the hunt for those Alexander Wang heels? I so appreciated all your emails with links to ones on sale and similar styles.

Well, I have a new hunt for you amazing readers!

The Mulberry Edie bag from their Spring 2011 collection.

A few days ago I was on the ever-so-crowded subway and was squashed next to a girl carrying this delightful tote. At first I noticed the signature Mulberry closure and then I saw the strap. My first thought, “oh, that’s an interesting idea! Putting a decorative camera/guitar strap on instead of the leather one!” but then I looked more closely. The strap had the Mulberry tree on it as well! Hot diggity dog! That’s a full on Mulberry bag! HOW HAVE I NOT SEEN IT!

So what did I do? I creepily snapped a picture of her bag and began my hunt on the interwebs. So far, I’ve had no luck tracking down one of these beauties. You all know how much I LOVE bags…so, any ideas where I can score one!?

I love you forever.

Matching the Sidewalk

April 26, 2012

Some people approach an outfit on a grey day by wearing as many bright colors as possible. I’m the exact opposite. I, without fail, end up matching my ensemble with the sidewalk beneath my feet and the grey clouds above my head. Yesterday was pretty overcast, and as you can see I went completely overcast with my look; but to give a little oomph to the dreary day/outfit I went with subtle prints and textures. Who knew leopards would get along with preppy tablecloths so well?
