The Justification Trial

December 10, 2012

How do you justify owning a certain article of clothing? Is it how often you wear it? How many outfits you can make out of it? Is it fulfilling a certain hole in your wardrobe?

I bought this blazer three years ago and can confidently say that I’ve worn it a total of four times. Should this have been a cheap purchase I wouldn’t think twice about the matter, but this Boy. By Band of Outsiders blazer made a dent in my bank account and it frustrates me that I don’t wear it more often (even though I get a tingly sensation of joy every time I put together an outfit that includes it).

But why!? Just because something costs more money doesn’t mean you have to wear it all the time, does it? Por ejemplo, the couches in my mom’s living room are way more expensive than the ones in our den, and I don’t hear her barking about which seat has a deeper butt imprint.

So I come back to my initial question, how do you justify owning a piece of clothing? I believe that the justification of a purchase is entirely different from the justification of owning it. Because while you may have gone through your purchasing checklist at check out, the way the piece translates into your “real life” could be drastically different (i.e. this blazer).

An Old Favorite

June 21, 2012

My summer uniform is pretty much filled with simple, playful dresses that I can mindlessly throw on and be out the door in ten minutes top. I probably add at least five new dresses to my wardrobe each summer, but it’s this dress in particular that I will forever return to.

I bought it about five years ago on a trip to Bloomingdale’s with a friend who was on the hunt for a pair of sandals for a wedding. I abandoned her in the shoe department (cheesy sales people, so not my scene) and meandered around the store admiring everything but swearing that I would walk out of there empty handed. Yeah right, like that ever happens…

Before I knew it I was in the dressing room trying on jackets, pants, sweaters, shirts, skirts, dresses, etc., but nothing was appealing enough for me to seal the deal. Just as I was about to give up and go find my friend, I started rummaging through the selections that the person before me had left in the dressing room. That’s where I met this dress by Free People. Who was I to turn down a dress with a fish print on it?

I’ve since worn it to everything you could possibly imagine: music festivals, a cocktail party (just add a blazer and some heels), swimming in the ocean (not kidding), and I’ve almost always worn it with matching red nails. This year however, I decided to try it out with Sally Hansen’s Magnetic nail polish in silver, which reminds me of fish scales with its squiggles and waves. Though the polish stands out on its own, it ended up blending in perfectly with my  dress, which has me thinking I may live in this entire outfit all summer long!

Ear Piece

March 1, 2012

Ear cuffs are having a moment and I gotta say, I’m kind of into it! I used to be a total earring fanatic but in the past few years they’ve taken a hiatus from my wardrobe. I often feel a little too “done up” when I wear earrings, though they are a perfect way to make a glamorous statement.

These ear cuffs, however, are making me rethink the aforementioned earring absence. I love how, like earrings, they can be big and bold or delicate and elegant, adding just a touch of edge to any look. I just bought this set of 3 ear cuffs and can’t wait to try them out with minimalistic outfits like a crisp white dress and simple pair of pumps. A white dress will require some sort of tan at this point, so I guess I’ll be self-tanning this weekend…

Combo Platter

December 14, 2011

A bunch of you have asked me to share more photos of this outfit from my post a few days ago, so here you go! This was easily my favorite outfit of the three I shared, probably because of the soft tones that are juxtaposed by the edgy metallic blazer. Love a good combo like that – kind of like combo platters at fast food restaurants. You gotta go combo or else it’s just b-b-b-boring!

Ok, enough of combo platters.

Though I’m not one to repeat outfits that frequently, I have a feeling this one is going to come home to San Francisco with me this weekend because it’s calling for a holiday party STAT!

:♦: Silver Spells :♦:

September 27, 2011

I’ve been channeling the tin man lately, coveting practically every article of clothing that is silver, pewter, or graphite. I love how the metallic shade can immediately make anything look polished (i.e. my iPhone would look a whole lot sleeker in a chrome case), grungy cool (silver foiled skinny jeans? why not!), and/or futuristic (I’ll take pewter colored Dr. Marten’s any day of the week).

My birthday is about two weeks away and I am officially on the hunt for a party outfit. My friends are pushing for a dress, but I’d be just as happy in a tin man inspired head-to-toe metallic ensemble, but maybe that’s just because Halloween is right around the corner…

Either way, I’ll definitely be adding some of these silver pieces to my wardrobe.
