The Other White Denim

May 30, 2013

Yellow7

After a long winter of tampons and black skinny jeans, I’m happy to report that the latter are folded up on the shelf for the summer (the former unfortunately is still planning her monthly visits, but whatever. For once this isn’t about Flo). Though I’m not quite ready for bare-legged season (we’re getting there though!), my growing collection of white denim has become the go-to alternative to my fall through winter black jean obsession. But after a few weeks of back-to-back white jeans combined with being too lazy to do laundry (don’t judge me. I know you relate), there comes a point when:

a) You realize you need to lock it up, get some quarters, and do laundry. But come on, this breakthrough only comes when you’ve run out of underwear.

b) Your friends start making side comments about your recurring outfits and/or the guac stain build up on your pant legs. ‘Tis the season for margs and guac! AmIright!?

c) You start seeking alternatives to your new and very obvious addiction.

I went with C. and found the next best thing to white jeans in a soft canary yellow pair that coincidentally match this house around the corner from my apartment. Go figure!

After a few tastings, like pork to chicken, I found yellow jeans to be the other white meat. Though they aren’t quite as versatile and uniform as a grilled piece of chicken (or white denim), when paired correctly or standing on their own (if going topless is your thing), they become the commanding item on the plate…or outfit. I’m losing track of whether I’m discussing pants or poultry here. But I digress…

The point here is that I still haven’t done laundry and am just waiting for the next pivotal stain  — be it guac related or because Flo’s in town — to make it’s mark. And until that happens, I find solace in knowing that yellow pants will continue to dominate in my daily sartorial choices, even while wearing a shirt that makes me look like Quasimoto from time to time.

But don’t worry, I won’t leave you with a photo of me channeling the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Instead, I leave with you this close up shot of some arm swag complete with a bracelet adorned in beads reading, “Let’s Bone.” Spring’s supposed to be about babies anyways…

Transeasonal

I know what you’re thinking. “Sonia, you showed us a photo of this outfit on Friday. Throw something else out there.” And I hear you. I really do. But I felt I should give you a little more info as to my thought process behind the look.

When I was approached by StyleCaster to style an outfit for spring, my immediate thoughts went to my leather jacket. I realize that a leather jacket doesn’t exactly scream spring, but it’s transeasonal. Is that a word? Probably not, but I’m making it one. You see, the beauty of spring and fall is that the climate isn’t extreme. You can wear shorts with a puffer jacket. Pants with a tank top. A ski suit with flip flops. In this scenario however, I opted for florals (I know…”groundbreaking”) to break up the edginess of the leather biker jacket that I actually did buy at a Harley Davidson store.

The result is what I like to think as effortlessly European — as in “ooh I am wearing this floral outfit but there is a slight chill so let me just throw on this rough biker jacket before I hop on my Vespa to go drink wine outdoors with friends.” (I hope you all read that in a French accent). So maybe I should rethink those Isabel Marant sandals as my spring investment and go for a Vespa, because that seems pretty transeasonal too.

A Week in Review

April 12, 2013

Review1

Summer inspiration from the latest Free People catalog.

I wish I could say I find it fascinating when one person manages to ruin a perfectly good day, but really it just infuriates me. This happened to me this past week when I confidently sat down to a meeting and walked out feeling like the smallest molecule on the planet. There are some occasions when this happens that I can puff up my chest like a beefy guy at the gym and walk around as if no one can hurt me, but this week all I wanted to do was curl up in a ball under my covers and feel sorry for myself. And that’s exactly what I did. But you know what? I think that’s ok sometimes. Because puffing up your chest can be exhausting — and hard on the back — and from time to time we all just need a day to soak up feeling icky. Much like a bath, after a good ick soak I usually wind up feeling better. I’ve had that “woe is me” moment and now I can move on with my life. Which is just what I did the following day. I went on a run, I ticked everything off my to-do list, and treated myself to a glass of champagne during lunch.

I guess what I’m trying to say here is that no matter how strong we may be, certain people will always have an ability to slither their way into our weakest areas and make us feel bad about ourselves. But I think sometimes it’s better to acknowledge that bad feeling, see what made you feel that way, and then do some emotional sit ups to strengthen that area for the next time that evil human comes snaking about. And with that I bid you a good weekend surrounded by the people who make you feel great!

New Seasons, New Nostalgia

March 26, 2013

Nostalgia

New York City is still getting its fair share of snow, but I am hanging onto the promise of spring (and summer). It’s in the first few days of a new season that I begin to get amped about what’s to come — hello sunshine, outdoor activities, and weekend getaways — and what’s about to disappear — goodbye couch, pale skin, and winter depression. Once that warmer weather hits and the afternoon light lingers well into the evening, I would much rather spend my time being productive than curled up on the couch watching another season of Sex & the City for the umpteenth time. For the record, this sense of “productiveness” can be utilized in the laziest of ways — i.e. lying like a beached whale on the grass with your friends eating lots of hummus.

Indeed, spring and summer are the seasons where the best memories are made. Songs played on repeat become forever ingrained as “the songs of the season”, every weekend becomes a venue for an impulsive getaway, and even the smallest things like happy hour become epic events because everyone is just in a better mood (gotta love that Vitamin D!)

But the start of the warmer seasons also bring an inevitable sense of nostalgia. Those songs of last spring and summer will never sound as good as they did those first hundred times. My plans to do exactly what I did the year before — music festivals, spring’s first barbecues, rogue trips — will never really be same. And that’s neither good nor bad, it’s just different. As much as we want to relive last year’s memories, we also want to make new ones. This year already promises new experiences starting off with a road trip down south, a bachelorette party in Miami, and multiple weddings come August. And while I have no doubts that activities like epic happy hours and last minute weekends to the Hamptons and Connecticut will generously sprinkle themselves into the next five months, I look forward to making the memories that I’ll be nostalgic for next year.

Ani Lee — The New Spring Staple

March 18, 2013

I’m very loyal to the brands that I love. Rag & Bone, Zara, Stella McCartney, Paige Denim, Equipment — I don’t have to tell you that I wear these brands religiously. But while these favorites will forever stay at the top of my list, I am always on the lookout for new labels that send my heart beating a mile a minute — because that’s what amazing clothes do to us, isn’t it? One delicious pair of stilettos and we’re ready to wear them to the gym simply because we don’t want to let them out of our sight. A new purchase is like the honeymoon phase with a boyfriend — we cannot get enough. (And yes, I really did just say that.)

While browsing through unread emails not too long ago, I stumbled across a standard press release sharing images of X celebrity wearing X label. Normally I delete these emails since that’s not something I generally share on here, but when I saw an image of Diana Agron wearing a schoolgirl inspired dress by a designer I’d never heard of until now, Ani Lee.

As someone who prefers crisp fall weather to balmy spring and summer, I don’t usually get too excited over spring/summer clothing. But Ani Lee nails the warm weather look with tailored short suits, feminine playsuits, and breathable dresses, all of which work for either day or night; a necessity for the warmer months as you really want to grab a happy hour table without having to go home to change first.

Check out her entire collection here!
