Coachella Style Guide

Coachella

While we’re on the topic of Coachella (which, whether you like it or not, will be a subject for the next month or so), I bring you three fool proof festival outfits to get you through the weekend*. Though I am not attending this year — my friend and I bought tickets but then some other trips presented themselves and we decided to sell them — I like to think of myself as having a PhD in multi-day festivals.

The most important thing to keep in mind when packing and dressing for these outdoor fun fests is comfort. The second most important thing to keep in mind is sunblock. But I don’t need to school anyone on the subject of sun protection, so instead I present you with three outfits that I would likely wear were I attending Coachella this weekend.

Numero Uno:

Outfit1

APC bag | Topshop romper | Madewell chambray | Superga sneaks | Asos sunglasses | Dannijo bracelet

I originally believed that wearing any sort of romper or overall type coverup was a major mistake when attending a music festival; mainly because they take a little longer to get off when you desperately need to go #1. However, after living in a romper at Bonnaroo (yes, I went. Twice.), I can attest that these full-pieces are comfortable, surprisingly climate controlled, and ideal when worn over a swimsuit. Since you tend to cover a lot of ground while traipsing around the desert, I recommend wearing a comfortable pair of sneakers (foot sunburns suck), a reasonably sized bag, and a light chambray for when the sun goes down.

Numero Dos:

Outfit2

Jennifer Zeuner necklace | Asos sunglasses | Vanessa Bruno dress | ModCloth bag | Red Valentino sandals

Forget everything I said earlier about a reasonably sized bag. This ladybug purse is the bee’s knees (or ladybug’s forearms?) and is guaranteed to get you festival style snapped — something as common as a street style snap during Fashion Week. But adorably sweet bags aside (wait, have you seen my chicken bag?), a dress that covers your rear when you sit on the grass and allows for whatever breeze there may be to go up your skirt is essential to festival cheer. Also, you can wear that chambray in the above outfit around your waist during the day and over your shoulders when it gets cold at night.

Numero Tres:

Outfit3

Proenza Schouler bag | 3.1 Phillip Lim shirt | Asos sunglasses | Clover Canyon shorts | Asos sandals

These V-line shorts are the latest craze in shortswear and though I have yet to try out a pair, I imagine they’re great for tanning. Short tans are so last season, ring tans on the other hand are totally in.  And since you’ll be in California, why not give a shout out to New York and all the Seamless Web delivery bags you’ll likely be accumulating during your week long post-Coachella hangover by wearing an I ♥ New York shirt. Or Nueva York. Whatever.

The Iconic Trench (and a Giveaway!)

March 19, 2013

The trench coat is such an iconic piece of clothing. From Audrey Hepburn kissing George Peppard in the rain in Breakfast at Tiffany’s to the flasher most likely getting arrested for his indecency, the trench coat is as important to one’s wardrobe as the little black dress (another Breakfast at Tiffany’s staple) or the white button down (not a flasher’s staple). What is perhaps the best part about trench coats is that they are seasonless. Wear one over a cozy cashmere sweater and a light biker jacket in the winter or atop your floral sundress in the spring and no one is going to second guess your choice of outerwear — including you.

How do I know this? Because trench coats are one of the only options of outerwear that’s sold year round. Unless you’re hitting up places like The Outnet or Yoox you’re likely not going to find a trench on sale, though it’s very easy to find one that’s reasonably priced (like the one I’m wearing right herrrrrr).

But enough about the trench. Let’s discuss what’s really going to get you twinkling on this fine Tuesday. These burgundy Denimocracy jeans are about as comfortable as they come (read: there’s a ton of stretch), and I want you to experience their comfort as well. So, I’m giving away a pair of these butt cupping stretchy lovers to one of your fine specimens. Here’s what you have to do to enter bo benter:

1. Like Denimocracy on Facebook (here)

2. Tell me you liked their Facebook page in the comment section below.

3. Also tell me the superpower you wish you had in the comment section below.

I will announce the winner on Friday! GOOD LUCK CHUCK!

The giveaway is now closed. Thank you all for entering!

Congratulations to Emily! An email is coming your way! Stay tuned for more giveaways soon!

Worth the Wait

December 19, 2012

Coat5

With each season comes a trendy silhouette; the satchel bag, the ankle boot, the wide leg pajama pants, etc. And under this silhouette “umbrella” reside specific must-have items: the Mulberry ‘Alexa’ bag, the Alexander Wang bootie, the Marc Jacobs pant.

Sometimes I stand beneath this umbrella, decorating myself in as many trendy silhouettes as I (a.k.a. my bank account) can manage. Other times, I stick my nose in the air and let the rain fall in, unmoved by the current fads. And then there are those times that I am so late to the trend that I may as well have been living in a mole hole for the past few years unaware of any popular silhouettes settling beneath a season’s umbrella. Such is the case with my recent acquisition of this green parka jacket.

The selling point for me after all these years was the furry hood. I love how giant it is, and that it sits upright and perky around my shoulders (wow, it really sounds like I’m talking about an erection here, but let’s move beyond my word choice).

Growing up, I loved watching old movies with women dressed in luscious fur coats that practically engulfed them with their volume and buoyancy — kind of like a squirrel tail. So, when I saw how this fur hood encompassed its model, I knew my search for the human eating furry parka coat had come to an end.

This trend may have been around for awhile, but I’m glad I waited until I found the exact parka I was looking for.

Sweet Cherry Pie

July 5, 2012

As someone who feels most confident in jeans, boots, and a leather jacket, I used to dread the summer because I was forced to shelve my favorite outfits. But in the past few years I’ve really started to embrace summer apparel beyond the world of cut offs and tank tops, and I actually get excited about all the cutesy summer dresses I get to break out!

This cherry print dress is about as girly as they come so I didn’t hesitate to wear it to our 4th of July barbecue at the beach. Round of applause for me not spilling ketchup all over it.

An Old Favorite

June 21, 2012

My summer uniform is pretty much filled with simple, playful dresses that I can mindlessly throw on and be out the door in ten minutes top. I probably add at least five new dresses to my wardrobe each summer, but it’s this dress in particular that I will forever return to.

I bought it about five years ago on a trip to Bloomingdale’s with a friend who was on the hunt for a pair of sandals for a wedding. I abandoned her in the shoe department (cheesy sales people, so not my scene) and meandered around the store admiring everything but swearing that I would walk out of there empty handed. Yeah right, like that ever happens…

Before I knew it I was in the dressing room trying on jackets, pants, sweaters, shirts, skirts, dresses, etc., but nothing was appealing enough for me to seal the deal. Just as I was about to give up and go find my friend, I started rummaging through the selections that the person before me had left in the dressing room. That’s where I met this dress by Free People. Who was I to turn down a dress with a fish print on it?

I’ve since worn it to everything you could possibly imagine: music festivals, a cocktail party (just add a blazer and some heels), swimming in the ocean (not kidding), and I’ve almost always worn it with matching red nails. This year however, I decided to try it out with Sally Hansen’s Magnetic nail polish in silver, which reminds me of fish scales with its squiggles and waves. Though the polish stands out on its own, it ended up blending in perfectly with my  dress, which has me thinking I may live in this entire outfit all summer long!
