Art on Your Sleeve

May 21, 2012

I love when my passions collide. When Pizza Hut came out with their stuffed crust pizza I practically passed out since the crust and the cheese are my two favorite parts. My heart stopped when a pink dolphin was spotted swimming in Lake Calcasieu, Louisiana (I actually made a sculpture of a pink dolphin my senior year in college. He now lives at my brother’s apartment). And when Carven sent Bosch printed skirts, shirts and dresses d0wn their Fall 2012 runway, my head started spinning 1000 times a second. Dizzy.

But since this is a fashion blog and the last thing you want is to hear me talk about my makeout session with a stuffed crust pizza, I shall focus on the art printed fashion that tickles my fancy. Carven isn’t the first label to send art printed pieces down the runway – who could forget the famous Mondrian print YSL shift dress ca.1965 – but it’s really the first time that I’ve started to look at works of art as potential textiles. For example, how amazing would a pair of Pollock splattered pants be? Or what about Botticelli’s Primavera printed on a blazer? A colorful Matisse printed on a structured dress a la Mary Katrantzou? Whoa beans. I’m by no means a fashion designer, but what I wouldn’t give to design a pleated Toulouse Lautrec skirt!

Check out some real life art printed pieces below!

On Keeping the Goods

April 9, 2012

When I was packing up my closet, I was forced to make those major decisions on what to keep and what to get rid of. Many people use the “if you haven’t worn it in over a year, throw it out” motto, but that just doesn’t work for me. Just because I haven’t worn it in over a year doesn’t mean I won’t wear it again. This cape is the perfect example. The last time I wore this superhero piece was back in January 2011. Over a year indeed and yet it still sits toward the front of my closet waiting for the day that I’ll wear  it again. This day was yesterday.

Most of my clothes are still stored away in boxes (my closet isn’t being built until next week), and I find it interesting that this cape was one of the last pieces I packed up, thus making it one of the more accessible articles in my apartment of cardboard. While it’s by no means an everyday piece – the whole shoulder bag thing just does not work with capes – it’s still one of my favorites and I have absolutely no intention of getting rid of it, even if I don’t wear it again for another year.

How do you go about deciding what to get rid of when you’re cleaning out your closet?

As someone who dresses a little more simply on a day-to-day basis, details are really important to me. For example, I love it when pants are lined with a bright color or when a collar is decorated with studs. The Spring 2012 runways were full of details but the gold adornments were the ones that caught and nestled in my eye. I mean, who doesn’t love a little gold bling in their everyday wear?

To put my art history major to good use, let me just say that Balmain’s collection was like Art Deco meets Byzantium with its angular lines decked out in gold. And then there’s Valentino with those perfect gold studs that seem to be the brand’s new defining factor. Jill Stuart may have been an Easter egg in fabric and colors but the nails were bedazzled in gold dots that I’m officially dubbing my next DIY. Dries Van Noten dabbled in the metallic hue with hints of copper on their shoes and Gucci had an Art Deco 1920s collection that I’d give my first child for. But if I had to choose a single gold embellishment for my Spring 2012 wardrobe, I’d have to go with Yves Saint Laurent’s gold-plated pepto bismol pink loafers that I hope to buy the second they hit stores.

Je Ne Sais Quoi

December 19, 2011

I know that a fashion blog is supposed to be all about showing off interesting outfits consisting of pieces that one wouldn’t necessarily think to put together, but I gotta tell ya, sometimes I just wear a simple pair of jeans and a t-shirt. This is an example.

After spending a few hours decorating our Christmas tree yesterday, I went for a little shopping stroll on Hayes street to hunt for some last minute Christmas presents and obviously a few treats for myself as well (I’m a brat). Feeling a little jet-lagged and sore from my flight (getting older is awesome…) I threw this casual outfit together and topped it off with a bold necklace from Samantha Wills to give the look that extra little  je ne sais quoi. Though not the most interesting outfit I’ve put together, it’s damn comfortable and sometimes that’s all that matters.

I admit that pattern mixing is not the easiest kind of outfit for me to put together. I don’t consider myself a very “loud” dresser and sometimes its just easier to throw on the basics and call it a day. This was not the case yesterday morning as I awoke ready to take on my closet and concoct an outfit full of multiple prints.

Taking note of the grey hue in one of my favorite blouses (it has a bunny print and a built-in bowtie…hello!), I matched it up with the smidge of grey in this zig-zag patterned skirt so there was just a hint of color coordination. Aside from that it every piece for it’s self, patterns, fabric, and all.

There’s no way I could dress like this everyday, but this outfit definitely added a little pizazz to my Monday.
