Holiday Blowouts

November 16, 2011

Thanksgiving is practically a week away, I’ve booked my plane ticket back to San Francisco for Christmas, and I’ve got about five parties coming up in the next couple of weeks - suffice it to say, the holiday season is here!

Fa la la la la la la la la!

As with every holiday season (see here and here), I’m on the hunt for a few new festive dresses to make the coming month that much more exciting. While last year my picks were a bit more scattered, this year I’ve narrowed my party dress wishlist down to three categories/trends: bold patterns, updated LBDs, and sequins and embellishments. Now comes the even harder part of narrowing it down to just one or two pieces!

Which ones would you choose? (Keep in mind the Thanksgiving dress always needs a bit of room around the waist…)

Sequins and Jerseys

I’ve never really considered myself a sequin kind of girl. They’ve always felt a bit too flashy for my taste and I just never really felt like myself wearing them. However, as more and more brands continue to create sequined pieces, I can’t help but find myself drawn to their lustrous sparkle. While I can’t imagine wearing a sequined dress with flirty heels and a cute little clutch to a dinner party, I do love the idea of wearing them during the day time with more casual fabrics like jersey knits. Whoever said sparkles were only for evening attire was seriously mistaken. Here are some of my current jersey/sequin cravings.

  1. All Saints Aztec Dress - $460
  2. Haute Hippie Marianne Long Skirt - $265
  3. Alternative Apparel Burnout Tee - $36

  9. Gryphon Academy Vest - $445
  10. Sam Edelman Lorissa - $200
  11. French Connection Galaxy Jersey Sequin Dress -$72
  12. T by Alexander Wang Playsuit - $45
  13. Antik Batik Florine Sequin Shoulder Bag -$370

This season I just can’t get enough  gray clothing. It’s chic when I need something chic, cozy when I need to bundle up, and easy to pair with practically everything in my closet. Unlike more prominent colors like purple and orange, gray never goes out of style and is thus always hanging on the racks. Lately I’ve been living in my All Saints grey Snood (see #4 here) and have been on the hunt for the perfect pair of gray trousers to go with everything from laid back nautical striped shirts to sky-high toe-pinching pumps. While the Topshop trousers featured below (#7) seem to fit the exact pant I’ve been looking for, I couldn’t help but include some of the other gray pieces I’ve been lusting over recently.

  1. Topshop Lace Hem Flannel Skirt - $70
  2. Maison Martin Margiela Exposed Shoulder Pad Top - $500
  3. Alice + Olivia Cuffed Shorts - $118
  4. Asos Pieces Chain Bucket Bag - $42
  5. French Connection Knitted Poncho - $138
  6. Jeffrey Campbell Grey Suede Lita - $160
  7. Topshop Tonic Tapered Trousers - $70
  8. Modcloth Linked In Belt - $18
  9. Rag & Bone Grayling Gairisle Hat - $140
  10. All Saints Carlino Cardigan - $200
  11. Delias Over-the-Knee Sock - $12.50
  12. Caractere Geometric Bracelet - $79

Luscious Leather

Leather is one of those fabrics that I just can’t get enough of. I love its buttery soft texture, how it adds an edginess to almost any look, and that designers are now using it to make a variety of different garments. Luscious leathers graced the runways of both F/W 2010 and S/S 2011, and the second the temperature dropped in NY people were busting out their leather jackets left and right. I already own two black and two brown leather jackets and far too many leather bags, but I can’t seem to help adding this delicious fabric to my wardrobe. And although leather goods tend to be on the pricier side, they’re durable enough to last awhile and almost always worth the investment; just like a little black dress, leather will never go out of style. Here are some of this season’s latest leather pieces that I’m dying to get my hands on:

  1. Topshop Leather Side Tie Tunic - $145
  2. 3.1 Phillip Lim Leather A-Line Skirt - $595
  3. Maje Anabelle Leather Dress - $685
  4. Fossil ‘Vintage Reissue’ Backpack - $218
  5. Givenchy Leather Cuff - $420
  6. Motif 56. Maxi Wide Zipper Belt - $198
  7. Pointer Elsie Oxford - $264
  8. Helmut Lang Leather and Stretch-Jersey Leggings - $690
  9. Maje Ampoule Leather Top - $485
  10. All Saints Owain Jacket - $690

It still doesn’t feel like Fall in New York and my wardrobe and I are getting pretty antsy. Thankfully, I’m getting out of the city this weekend and going camping with some friends up in the Catskills. Rumor has it that the weather is about fifteen degrees cooler there than it is in NYC and that the foliage is an array of autumnal oranges, reds, and yellows. I can’t tell you how excited I am to throw on some cozy flannels, wooly socks, and my new favorite accessory, the All Saints Snood and sit outside eating seasonal food and drinking Oktoberfest brews. Oh, and Finn gets to come too!

  1. L.L. Bean Moccasins - $50
  2. Sigi AlpacaTwist Leggings - $220
  3. Etoile Isabel Marant Wool-Blend Shirt - $280
  4. All Saints Yossi Hood Snood - $140
  5. Lowie Nordic Fingerless Gloves - $71
  6. Topshop Knitted Boyfriend Cardigan - $100
  7. Eddie Bauer Angora Snowflake Socks - $8.50
  8. Ray-Ban Aviator Sunglasses - $138
  9. F-Troupe Commando Brogue Boots - $253
