Holiday Blowouts

November 16, 2011

Thanksgiving is practically a week away, I’ve booked my plane ticket back to San Francisco for Christmas, and I’ve got about five parties coming up in the next couple of weeks - suffice it to say, the holiday season is here!

Fa la la la la la la la la!

As with every holiday season (see here and here), I’m on the hunt for a few new festive dresses to make the coming month that much more exciting. While last year my picks were a bit more scattered, this year I’ve narrowed my party dress wishlist down to three categories/trends: bold patterns, updated LBDs, and sequins and embellishments. Now comes the even harder part of narrowing it down to just one or two pieces!

Which ones would you choose? (Keep in mind the Thanksgiving dress always needs a bit of room around the waist…)

  1. Tibi Rococo Print Dress - $462
  2. Betsey Johnson Envy the Heiress Dress - $398
  3. Edun Marble Silk Chiffon Dress - $500
  4. Marc by Marc Jacobs Panthera Shift Dress - $358
  5. Topshop Tinsel Fringe Dress - $120
  6. AllSaints Char Dress - $295
  7. Rebecca Taylor Lace Bustier - $425
  8. Vanessa Bruno Athé Black-Beaded Dress - $360
  9. Anthropologie Wink & Rimple Dress - $228
  10. AllSaints Erodes Dress - $495
  11. Vince Sequin-Embellished Crepe Dress - $495
  12. Philosophy di Alberta Ferreti Embellished Lace-Overlay Dress - $322

Hang on Little Tomato

April 18, 2011

Ever since I saw the Rebecca Taylor tomato red dress come down the runway last fall (see here), I’ve waited patiently for it to hit stores. When I found out that the spring collection was on the racks, I searched high and low for the dress only to find that it was never produced. Woe is me. So after a shedding a few tears and throwing a few temper tantrums, I happily settled on its skirt version which has quickly made its way to being my favorite article of clothing for spring. Even though I received this skirt over a month ago, the crappy weather and my pasty white skin has prevented me from being able to wear it. However, last Thursday’s weather was so beautiful that I decided to overlook my transparent flesh tone and wore it to a few collection previews and a visit to the dog park with Finn. I can’t wait to wear it again with other pieces in my closet and transition it into evening apparel as well.

blogger by day, mathematician by night. KIDDING!

In case any of you were wondering what the title of my post came from…it’s from this Pink Martini song that makes its way into my head rather frequently:

When it comes to the color red I’ve always found that people either love it or hate it. I happen to be one of the people who loves the color. Perhaps it’s because it goes well with my hair and skin tone or because it’s really one of the only bright and bold colors I enjoy wearing, but either way I find myself constantly drawn to bright, robust reds. Give me a bold red lip, brick red bag (see here), or eye-catching red dress any day of the week and I’m set!

Thinking back to the Spring/Summer 2011 New York Fashion Week, I distinctly remember gushing over the poppy red accents in designer Adam Lippes’ ready-to-wear collection (see here) and a beautiful red chiffon dress by Rebecca Taylor (see here). Months later and those are still two of my biggest fashion standouts of New York Fashion Week. I think I shy away from red when I go shopping because I’m afraid of having too much of this bold color in my wardrobe, but I think it’s time I let that guard down and added a few more bright ruby reds to my closet.

  2. Forzieri Leather Bomber Jacket - $890

  5. Deborah Marquit French Lace Bra - $195
  6. Topshop Red Beaded Dress - $90
